I want to aquire a new server for my MMORPG server which will hold 1000+ online players, the server will work with a neverending increasing database (currently at 5GB) and files which total ~4GB.

I need at least 16GB of RAM, so I was thinking of buying this motherboard: Gigabyte X58A-UD3R and these RAM kits: Mushkin Triple Channel 12GB (3x4096MB) PC3-10666U, DDR3, 1333MHz, 9-9-9-24, 1.5V + Mushkin Triple Channel 6GB (3x2048MB) EM3-10666, DDR3, 1333MHz, 9-9-9-24, 1.5V. I will install a Intel® CoreTM i7-930 on it.

Am I making a good choice? Will those 2 RAM kits + CPU coexist in peace on this motherboard?

Yep.

Admittedly, depending on the price you get the 930 at, a Xeon 5620 might make more sense.

Motherboard gets a lot of recommendations at [H], but it has had some electrical noise issues reported. Look into getting a dedicated NIC as well, an Intel workstation grade (~110$) would probably be well spent.

Xeon 5620 is +50percent more expensive here, I would afford it but only if the performance gain is decent

In that case it's not worth it. How much are the 930 and 5620 in terms of absolute cost?

:/ That stink, the 930 is typically 270 USD and the Xeon 340$.

Romanian currency is different from US one, thus at a conversion from my currency to USD it may seem much for non-romanian

Quite expensive and I don't really need 24GB right now and won't need it in the near future
