Gigabyte P965 S3 Bios ?

Curious if the F7 bios better than F6 re: o/c stability? I'm currently on F6 w/o any problems.

I'm using the F7 BIOS and haven't had any problems yet. My rig is only 5 hours old.

Questions:
1) Did you put a cooler on your north bridge? Mine is blazin' hot.
2) How do you set 2.1 VDimm in the Bios? Is that based on the assumption that default is 1.8V?

i have a 90mm side case fan blowing on the NB -- but that sucker still gets hot!

default vdimm is on S3 "1.8" -- if your DDR2 specs @ "2.1" just use .3 setting.

looks like i'm sticking w/ F6 bios -- haven't had any problems so far! 🙂

Isn't your VCore a little high? I'm scared to go over 1.375. Or is that conservative??

I wouldn't update to the F7 bios if I were you. I was using the F7 bios and everytime I rebooted, the system would hang before the POST screen. I then installed the F6 bios and now the system reboots fine when I restart. There is no reason to update to the F7 bios If everything is working with your current bios.

Got mine back to F6. Thanks.

I'll try a higher vcore too. How about a higher vdimm??????? Warranty stops at 2.1V which is what I'm running right now.

Here's some information if you can diagnose.

Memtest #5 at FSB 350 = 2.8GHz....... PASSED
Memtest #5 at FSB 375 = 3.0GHz....... PASSED
Memtest #5 at FSB 385 = 3.1GHz....... PASSED
Memtest #5 at FSB 400 = 3.2GHz....... FAILED
Memtest #5 at FSB 401 = 3.2GHz....... PASSED CoreV: 1.3875
(The 401 trick really does help. Weird.)

Memtest #5 at FSB 401 = 3.2GHz....... FAILED!!! Only lasted 6 minutes. Then 3 minutes. Possible problem: north bridge overheating???

P965 S3 setings:

2.00 DDR2 Multi
1.45 Vcore (bios)
.1 -- fsb
.1 -- mch
.3 -- vdimm

DDR2 timings @ 5 5 5 15

What does all that mean? =) The only ones I understand are the Vcore, ddr2, and vdimm.

OP: by the way, how are you voltages with that power supply? I'm not sure exactly what model you have but I don't think the Ultra brand is highly regarded.

I'm never going back to the F7 crap bios. I haven't had a problem since switching back to the F6. The system ALWAYS restarts without hanging now when oc'ing.

I'm using the F7 and no problems. 😕

Edit: I may try F6 though... can I use @BIOS to flash backwards? I don't have a floppy drive installed and if I were to plug it in I'd have the problem of not having any floppy disks lying about...

ultra x-infinity 600W ps -- voltages have run fine for me -- I used it prior to o/c my opty 165 on a DFI Ultra-D mb to 2824mhz w/o incident as well. 🙂

Yes, you can use @BIOS to flash back to F6. I did the same thing but when my computer restarted it did this...... off... on (2 sec)... off... on (2 sec)... off... etc. I had to clear CMOS and reset my M.I.T. settings.

Has anyone tries the F8 newest BIOS?
F5 seems to be the most stable for me in overclocking. Everything else, system won't boot as high and as stable.

I'm using it since yesterday. E6300 OCed to 2.96 (P965-S3) all voltage stock. Works great so far. Was able to play oblivion/FEAR/BF2142 for a few hours.
