Gigabyte mobo + corsair XMS = no worky

ok my mate jus bout this rig

amd 64 3000 (winchester) skt 939
gigabyte skt 939 mobo...not sure of name exactly but its nforce 3 ultra, gigabit lan etc
galaxy geforce 6800gt
160gb sata
antec sonata

prob 1) we installed memory, in dims 1 an 3, boots up all is fine till ... prime wont load, memtest fails instantly. things crash, pretty unstable. CPUZ reports single channle and only 164.4mhz ram speed

takes closer look at manual ---> it says channle A = dimms 1 and 3 Channle B = 2 and 4. to enable dual channel technology ram modules most be placed seperatly in each. table shows to have dual channle with 2x512 sticks of corsair XMS we need them in dimms 1 and 2 or 3 and 4

swap em out, boot up.....no post just long beeps Dram prob. try them in 3and4 same thing. try them in 2 and 4 same thing. try them back in 1 and 3 same thing. try each 512 stick seperately in dimm1, works perfect try each in dimm2 worrks.

try back in 1and2 doesnt boot, try back in 1 and 3 works again

so running single sticks at 200mhz works fine, everything stable, all right speeds. computer wont boot wen memory is inserted in 1 and 2 or 3 and 4 for dual channle like manual says, and ram works kind of in 1 and 3 which is only single channle and running 164mhz

his bios wont update, he has no floppy to do it old fashioned way, so for now hes running 1 stick in dimm1 but hes payed for 1gb not 512

whats up we have an idea that its the mobo....both sticks are fine so it seems

updating the bios thru windows at least wont work...it returns errors when trying to erase the old bios

but yeah im sure its a mobo problem and maybes its because of the new winchesters

Buy a $10 floppy drive and update the bios the "old fashioned" way. As fixes go, that's cheap. No need to RMA yet.

Oh and added to the fact, make sure your board auto-detected the right timings for the ram. Mine had set tighter timings then the ram was rated at. Also make sure the voltage is where it should be.

Hmm, I have a Gigabyte 8KNXP Ultra working great with Corsair XMS RAM in dual channel. Doesn't mean much since it's not even an Athlon board, but whatever. ^^ Tough to believe you couldn't borrow a floppy drive from someone. I don't trust Windows to update my BIOS as a matter of principle...and my board has the dual BIOS thing so could supposedly survive corruption.

Good call. Couldn't hurt to try relaxing your timings a bit and see what happens.
