One thing that is starting to clear up is that Charlie's latter stories ended up being wrong, wrong, wrong. Dedicated physx hardware? Most likely not. Slower than pitcairn sometimes? Most likely not. Paper launch? Doesn't sound like that either. 350mm^2 die? Yeah no, 320mm^2 with heat spreader, 294mm^2 without.
 
Well hopefully it is not 30 and 40 like most expect. 30% is no better than the 7970, 40% and it's 10% faster. AMD most likely will still do better 1600P and up if it is that close.

Turd, or not a turd, that is the question.

Gotta read between the crayons with Groo the Wanderer's articles. He was right when he saw performance and blurted out "they win on every metric!!!". For the last years since he was at INquirer, He was correct about gt200 and gf100 on about a lot of things. Only things i got out of his recent drawings are that it was 100 was scrapped, 110 delayed, launch around april 2012, very fast new uarch. 7 and 8 unit skus. The rest was crap about samsung & apple and DOOM and GLOOM for Nvidia. No paper launch, Kepler rocks. Early sept '11, he wrote look to put Kepler in your computer April 2012, now 7 days before April 1, 2012, here it is. He obv knows whats going on at TSMC. it's the phsyx hardware part was funny, that was rumored to be a misdirection and he wrote an aritcle on it. I couldn't understand why hbe wrote "Oh it's sooo fast!!!" then the next day "could be slower than pitcarin" and stick to 7900 for max potential. Probably because he realized he hates Nvidia and everyone was going to read his new article saying Kepler is fast as sh!t and quit buying AMD 7000 cards, therefore derailing his number one objective: to destroy Nvidia's reputation. Break news and dis Nvidia at the same time proved difficult with a new efficient design, which is why his focus shifted to samsung, apple, notebook partnerships, tegra sucking, etc. Look for his future crap to be about GK110 conspiracies. Big kepler single die problems, yields, manufacturing changes and delays and a big story about the 104/110 developments unfolding bringing the 680 to market.

He was all over the place but was right about the efficiency though and gets some points there.

Right now in Heaven 3.0 my 470s at stock are 15% faster than a stock 7970, but they're 28% slower than the 680 results posted.

But all heaven is really doing is measuring the tessellation performance.

I will be so glad when the NDA lifts and the actual reviews are posted. This silly season has been sillier than most. I don't think there's ever been this much speculation outside of Wall Street.

actually, IIRC, charlie so far is very spot on, than other sites

Dedicated physx ...not charlie
sometimes lower than pitcairn ...agree, unlikely
Paper launch ...nop, soft launch, like 78XX series

he never stated die size, just that it were smaller than amd's

HD 7970 at stock is up to anywhere between 10 to 25% faster than GTX580 in games benchmarks at 1080p (depending on reviewers)

Given everything that's been said and leaked. lower number of transistors, considerably smaller, lower TDP than the 7970 but same texture unit count and ROPs, the level of performance that was first targeted with GK104, I think we can reasonably assume that it will not be more than 10% over the 7970.

Yeah I did a few more too 😀

I went all the way up to the Zotac GTX 560ti 448 speeds and it's still slower than this, 76.3 fps... While I obviously can't say for sure, it would seem this is pretty dang close to stock GTX 570 SLI performance. But this is pretty tess limited, that doesn't mean it's going to translate over to real world games.

Well if that's the case, the 680 is garbage. That will be a smaller increase over the 580 than the 7970 gave over the 6970. Worse is that will be about half the increase nvidia gave with their initial flagships on 40nm and 60nm.

I can't see them unleashing a turd like that for their flagship. But the small die certainly makes it sound possible.

Some inside info? AMD Games Evolved titles? Probably you're right. If it had a clear advantage be sure that the price would have been more than $550.

No, your comment is garbage.
Perf/W, Perf/$, Perf, Perf/mm2 and a nice plus on the feature side makes this chip overpriced in the grand scheme of things but anything but garbage. If by your standards the 680 is garbage, what is the 7970 then? Dirtier garbage?

The technological predecessor of GK104 is GF114. Don't be blinded by marketing. If you want to judge a chip by its characteristics, at least to it right.
 
I've been considering it personally.

I tried this analogy with my sugar momma, what do you guys think? Anything I could change in it to better my chances of getting a green light for upgrade?

Surely it's possible to extrapolate perf/w into actual performance (I'd do it, but I'm at work 😀).

I wouldn't mind a $500 card that overpowers the 7970!
