Hey there, was recommended these forums by a friend, hopefully you guys can help me with my problem.

I have a pretty limited knowledge of computers, so keep that in mind if possible :)

First off i have the following motherboard:

Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard

the following CPU:

Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.40GHz (1066FSB)

and the following RAM (just incase):

GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-6400C5 800MHz Value DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX22GB6400DC)

So i thought id have a go at overclocking my system, so i read a few guides and poked about in my BIOS a bit and downloaded a bunch of programs tha were recommended. Everything was going fine, i was using one of those programs that allows you to alter the BIOS from windows (EasyTune), but the changes werent saving for some reason so i thought id have a go at doing it directly in the BIOS, I thought id learn more that was a well.
Thats where the problem started, i somehow managed to underclock my cpu.... i know, not going too well was it?

Anyway, after doing some more poking the problem seems to be that the multiplier is stuck at 6x. Its reading as 9x (which it should be) in BIOS, but cpu-z is telling me its definately 6x, and my cpu has gone down from 2.4 to 1.6, so i believe it.

So, after several hours trawling the net for help, i cant find a way to fix this, and i really, really dont want to do anything major to the BIOS or flash it or anything like that, because ill just get myself into more trouble ^^.

Any help you can give would be greatly appriciated.

Thanks in advance.

what does the BIOS say for the speed of the CPU?
I'd uninstall any of those programs you installed and then run "CCleaner" and have it do multiple passes of the cleaner and registry option till it can find no errors, and then reboot.

OK i tried uninstalling the windows based BIOS programs i was using, ran CCleaner, but the same problem, multiplier stuck on 6x, showing as 9x in the BIOS, cpu at 1.6.

as for the cpu speed:

CPU clock host control - 266 (is that what you were asking for?)

Any other suggestions?

Thanks.

sounds like whatever program you ran did something to the BIOS. I would try reflashing it.

what programs did you use, I'm going to have to do some research as to what they did.

also, when you were using them did you have to adjust a jumper at any time?

Im really sorry for wasting your time, truely. It was speedstep, and my lack of knowledge in not realising it. Oh well, at least i learned something ... even if it did take 6 hours of my life to do so.

I changed the ram timings and voltage and upped the fsb to 300 from 266, and the voltage slightly, running Prime atm, im well on my way.

Thanks.

you've not wasted anyones time, it's better to ask than to not ask at all.

I gather then everything is good then.

and the cpu is showing up at the correct speed. the software is good, but I would recommend you get some time with the system before you try overclocking. I on the other hand keep my settings stock and have never had a issue.
