I have been looking for an Nforce4 Motherboard that has a passive cooler on the chipset. And I have found one its the new Gigabyte GA-K8N Ultra-9! All this time I was pretty much planning on getting a board made by ASUS or MSI. But now it looks like the Gigabyte GA-K8N Ultra-9 has what I have been looking for. Just a few things I need to know. 1 what do you think of Gigabyte? How do they compare to ASUS or MSI or even DFI? Also I know ASUS and MSI have a tool that lets you update the BIOS from your Desktop when in Windows. Does Gigabyte have the same type of thing? And last what do you think of this new board Gigabyte GA-K8N Ultra-9?Thanks so much for your help I may be getting real close to buying!

1) Gigabyte is about the same as ASUS and MSI.

2) Yes, you can update the BIOS from Windows though I don't recommend that (for any board).

3) An Ok board. If you don't want extreme overclocks you'll be very happy with the quality, features and stability it offers.

Hey,

I'm looking at this board and the Soltek SL-K8T890 board. They both have passive cooling....

If you run a search you'll find a lot of posts about this board -> lots of them are positive :). However, it seems as though to overclock, you'll need to swap the passive cooling for some active cooling (in the mosfets) - I saw this bit of advice in the a thread discussing the SLi version of this board. So just put a fan in there and you should be fine.

It does not seem like a bad board at all, however the "nforce4-4x" version of this board (the cheaper version, which is like $20 less) doesn't come with enough cables according to some people.

Overall gigabyte is pretty sharp quality.
MSI .... not so much. Some of their boards use bad capacitors and there is always something wrong with the boards - according to a few friends of mine who own this and according to a few searches that I made on this forum about the board. Good overclocker though. Lots of features.

I've been an ASUS fan for a while, however with their latest boards (The A8N and the A8V-E) seems to have crapped out on quality. Some recent bios updates have fixed the majority of the problems with this board, but do a quick search and you'll find that a lot of people RMA'd this board (A8N). The thing about ASUS is that they tend to have lots of problems in the beginning, but with their new revisions and bios updates they end up being great. The A8N has loud active cooling over the chipset (not good if you're building a HTPC), same with the MSI neo4.

And if you're looking for tech support - soltek is great, they even have a tech representitive on this forum.

However I think that the DFI LanParty UT is a great board too - it DOES have active cooling, but MUCH (MUCH) quieter than the other nforce4 boards. It tends to be a bit picky on the RAM. Great for overclocking. With the latest bios, most of the problems have gone.

About DFI's tech support: they got their own damn forum. Its amazing: www.dfi-street.com... youll be scared though, becuase every other post is "I have a problem POSTing. BUT, the only people that post (...no pun intended :p) there are guys who have problems.

I think that the gigabyte is a great choice - with features like Dual Bios, you can't go wrong.

Edit: DOH. ChineseDemocracyGNR beat me to it.

He's right about the overclocking, if you want some moderate overclocks (nothing too EXTREME, you should be happy with this board).

I will not be over clocking. One more thing Is a passive cooler safe to use VS a FAN like most of the Nforce4 boards have?

I'm not sure that it is very safe. It is known that NF4 SLI or Ultras get very hot during operation. Also a review guy at xbit-labs fried Chaintech NF4 Ultra Zenith board that was passively cooled while overclocking. Also some preproduction board from Asus (A8N-E Premium) that was passively cooled never got to stores. Seems that Asus finaly chose to replace their HSF on their NF4 boards according some fresh A8N-SLI Premium pictures so it might be worth wait for this board, or for A8N-E Premium that also should apear soon if you are not for SLI thing.
