I haven't built a system since my old Asus a798x deluxe with an Athlon 2500.

I know a lot has changed since then and I am looking for any advice/opinions with building my new system.

I am currently thinking about buying this setup:

GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3P

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz

Memory? I do want something affordable (meaning nothing in the $300.00 dollar range).

I have been looking at some of these and I can't decide to go with 2X2 GB or 4X2GB:

G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F2-6400CL5D-4GBPQ - Retail

G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F2-8500CL5D-4GBPK - Retail

OCZ Reaper HPC 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model OCZ2RPR10664GK - Retail

OCZ Platinum 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model OCZ2P10664GK - Retail

OCZ Reaper HPC Edition 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model OCZ2RPR800C44GK - Retail

G.SKILL PI Black 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F2-6400CL4D-4GBPI-B - Retail

4GB seems pretty cheap now ....so I was wondering if I should go ahead and get 8GB since it's fairly cheap per GB.

I am also looking for an affordable Video card and PSU

Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

those are all good kits, i'd stick with something 1.8-1.9vRam. high voltage kills ram the fastest. Speed and timings are negligible, i'd put them in priority after low voltage.

Thanks for your help

If you could pick one....which would you pick?

also ...800 or 1066?

After reading some more reviews, i was thinking about going with this memory:

Model
Brand G.SKILL
Series PI Black
Model F2-6400CL4D-4GBPI-B
Type 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM
Tech Spec
Capacity 4GB (2 x 2GB)
Speed DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)
Cas Latency 4
Timing 4-4-4-12
Voltage 1.8V - 1.9V
Heat Spreader Yes
Recommend Use High Performance or Gaming Memory
Manufacturer Warranty
Parts Lifetime limited
Labor Lifetime limited

I was thinking about going w 8GB of this. Any thoughts? Voltage is low and everyone seems to be able to run the 4X2GB sticks of these in the Gigabyte board.

Any help? I was thinking about trying Vista 64 bit or Windows 7 Beta. Any suggestions?

Thanks, Memphis

I tend to buy high-end memory for my systems. But I haven't migrated to DDR3-systems yet. DDR2 is cheap now. I've tried -- and used -- memory from Crucial (Micron), G.SKILL, Corsair and OCZ in the last two years -- all DDR2. Nobody now wants to touch Crucial with a ten-foot pole -- at least, that's my assessment.

I picked up a set of 2x2GB Black PI G.SKILLs in January. I think they're great. The set I got was the DDR2-900 spec rated for 4,4,4,12. The rated voltage range is 2.0 to 2.1V. I'm running them at 850 Mhz, 2.0V and 4,3,3,8. Very impressed with them. I think they cost me just over $50.

I also have a set of G.SKILL DDR2-1000's -- not the Black PI model though. They were also quite good. But I purchased them in January, 2008, when their price was more like $130. Today, they can be had for about what I paid for the Black PI's, I think -- anyway.

I can't tell if you're planning to OC your computer-build. I choose my memory rated-speed for flexibility -- less with the intention of running them at full spec. And I look to see whether the latencies can be tightened at minimum voltage if I decide on a lower over-clock setting that doesn't push the memory to its full spec.

EDIT: By the way -- I've seen testaments from users that they could run those DDR2-900's at 4,4,4,12 and at 900+ Mhz with voltage setting closer to 1.95V. I haven't tried running mine at the below-spec voltage, although I saw my motherboard default them to around 1.9V when I first installed them and before re-setting my OC configuration. But if the spec says "2.0 to 2.1V," I thought I'd stay within the rated spec.

From what I've read on other forums, 8 gig can be hit or miss, especially with OCZ ram. This board likes G. Skill and I've got Patriot 6400 in mine at the moment. Bought some 8500, but one stick was bad so I'm waiting for them to return from RMA. I'm not going to try 8 gig though.

That's the set I was using until I picked up the 900-Mhz Black-PI kit. The very same kit. They're great. I don't think I was able to tighten the latencies below 4,4,4,10 in the 800 to 900 range with those, but they're great.

I'm thinking about this board too. I joined Gigabyte's tech support forum and persuaded them to tell me what they used to proof-test 16GB capability.

They finally admitted "Our team has tested Samsung M378T5263AZ3-CF7 DDR2 800 4GB X 4 on this board."

So, I think PC6400 is safe for up to 16 GBs of installed memory. BUT!!! YMMV!!!

Whatever you do, DO NOT check the Gigabyte site for their Supported Memory List.

That would be too easy.

Please stop. The supported list rarely has all the different brands that people have used which work fine. Best way to know is word of mouth so he is perfectly fine asking the question.

Case in point, Gigabyte boards typically love GSkill the best, yet I don't see any on that list. Also, how about the guy several posts above using 2x2gb Ballistix? Meanwhile all they have on the supported list is a 512mb stick.

I have the same mobo and also a DQ6 both have the GSKILL 1066 Mem. I am running 4 2GB sticks in the DQ6 and 4 GB (2 @ 2GB) in the UD3P. Never any problems with either and the price is right. GSKILL has my business.

With Vista 64 and now Windows7 64 bit the 8 GB of ram kick butt.

Great Post & Tips!
I am hoping to try this board with a Xeon 3350 & am very curious which memory would be oc & Stable with XP & W7 for FPS games etc. Am checking out XS & TweakTown Gigabyte forums too...

Trying to decide between these two or other recommended ones...

G.Skill PC8500 4GBPK 2 x 2gb

G.Skill PC8800 4GBPI 2 x 2gb

I would say 4gb (at the least) is the way to go depending on your future OS.

Take my comment/update as you will . . .

I'm pretty sure that the -UD3P and -UD3R are quite similar.

I was having a lot of trouble with my -UD3R and some vintage-2007 OCZ Platinum XTC DDR2-800 kits.

Some of the customer reviews at NewEgg suggest what also may be posted elsewhere on forums: the board(s?) may not play "nice" with certain varieties of OCZ RAM. One or more people reported that it works fine with a Reaper kit, even so.

I finally -- reluctantly -- replaced the OCZ kits with a DDR2-1000 4GB G.SKILL kit, and I'm back in business . . . . . tentatively, at least . . . .

My troubles are chronicled on my thread asking for comments on the -UD3R.

Hi XelHa,

I wonder whether you could get GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3P works with Xeon processors?

Thanks.
