The L in the board name means either low-cost/light. The EP45-UD3LR has smaller heatsinks on the NB/SB and none on the VRMs when compared to the UD3R rev1.1. It doesn't have the eSATA headers and it has only 6 regular SATA connectors. It's also 3cm shallower.

Yeah I should have added that there's nothing wrong with the board compared to the non-L models other than a bit of overclockability. Some people might miss the eSATA headers, but not me. I only wish their P45 boards were better laid out. They obviously did a little more homework when it came to designing their X58s.

so what makes it less overclockable than the other boards?
smaller hs on the north/southbridges?

in generral you can't pump as much voltage due to heat... bot for reasonable oc's it should be fine...

this and an e5200 would rock price/perf... 3.3+ ghz pretty easy...

Could this motherboard be powered by an older PSU that has a 20 pin ATX connector istead of a 24 pin? Would I need a 20 to 24 pin converter or not?

It does have the 4 pin 12V conector and puts out 32Amps on a single 12v rail.
