Please note, this is not the 965p and doesn't overclock very well. If you want a cheap conroe board that's pretty good, this may be your ticket. The egg sells this for around $145.

Why doesn't it overclock well? Isn't the 965G just the 965 chipset with graphics tacked on, or is there some sort of fundamental difference in the chipsets that make the G version a poor performer, overclocking wise?

This is the short answer posted by our very own Anandtech editor.

In order to protect the operation of the X3000 graphics engine, Intel instituted a hardware lock in the chipset that turns off asynchronos memory timings. This means the boards are not going to be overclocking any where near their P965 counterparts.

At this price, though, I would say this is the best bang for the buck if you're considering a Conroe build.

I'd be interested to see comparisons of the new Intel X3000 intigrated graphics and staples like the nvidia 6100 and ATI X300.

This could be an incredibly good deal for someone who doesn't game much or the only gaming they do is older titles.

Bah, no asycn memory timings. Well, that explains it.

So, hardware wise, the chipsets are virtually the same, minus the lock and the added graphics. Which begs to question why the 965P boards are $40-$50 more than these?

Yes they are the same board, but the 965G is handicapped via a hardware lock for the sole purpose of protecting the integrated graphic.
