i recently bought a gigabyte mobo to build my new system with. it is a ga-6vx-4x slot 1. i am not an overclocker, i just want to run everything at the speed theya are supposed to. so i bought a p3 866 cpu to put in. somehow the start screen shows that it runs at 840e. the multiplyer dip switch has no effect on it. only the fsb dip switch and jumper can affect the speed. but if i try to set the fsb to 133, which it is supposed to run at, then i would not be able to get past the start screen. if i set it below 133, which means putting the jumper on and manipulating the dip switch, then it would start. in the cmos setting i have to make sure i set everything to run "slow" or it would even start.
anyone have any idea what is happening?
is the gigabyute mobo simply no good?
does anyone else has this mobo? does it work?
any suggestion is helpful.
thanks

Try updating the bios, that chip you have is relatively new compared to the board.

yes, i would also try to update the BIOS first. but dont blame the mobo...at least not right away. GigaByte makes excellent mobos.

i put in the new bios and, after alot of difficulties, got the mobo to work properly. now it runs...but not after causing havok with the operating system. i have had to reinstall my win98 several times, each with some mysterious error while loading. it is not over yet.
