I bought this motherboard back in december as the basis for my new core i7 setup and I want to say that its great and I highly recommend it. I was originally going to buy the Asus Rampage Extreme II but now I am glad I didn't. At the time it was one of the more cheaper ones but based on reviews I wasn't seeing how that the Asus one was worth £80 more.

Two x16 slots, overclocks like a dream using the EasyTune software, great bundle. So if you're looking at buying this I hope this recommendation will make your decision easier.

^ Lol thats what I was thinking, but glad you like it; I am also looking at getting one. Wouldn't use the software OC though, best to do that from bios.

The only problem I have with mine is that it squeals when using the NIC for downloads. It seems to be a common problem. Maybe a PCI card will fix it.

Great board- audible tho

Pros: Excellent oc'er, good cooling. Gigabyte does well as usual.

Cons: I read other accounts, and my own board confirmed that this thing squeals a bit (capacitors?). You can hear it under network load. (This is not fan noise)

Other Thoughts: Who cares about a little squeak here and there? It's under your desk.

I hear the main difference between the UD5 and extreme is the waterblock. I have also heard it isnt that useful. Please correct me if I am wrong, I figure UD5 is the way to go for air cooling.

It's the only difference. The motherboard doesn't squeal in linx, I'll try it on XP.

Does the waterblock on the NB on the Extreme need to be connected to a liquid cooling system for it to work as effectively as the standard heatsink on the UD5?

The reason I ask is that I have a liquid cooling system for the CPU block, and I am hoping to liquid cool the NB (and possibly SB, Mosfets and Voltage Regulators) and GPU eventually on a second loop.

If I buy the UD5, then I will need to replace the heat sinks on the NB, SB and Mossfets, and Voltage Regulators (I'm guessing) due to the heat pipes connecting them together (I'm guessing I can't replace one independantly of the others). Or can you retrospectively fit a water block on top of the UD5 NB heatsink and the copper pipework will help cool everything else.

The only difference I can see from looking at the photos is the NB and mosfet heatsinks.

Maybe it is M$ squealing because Linux is replacing it? ... Anyways I am looking at getting this MB too. I have a question for those that already have it or that know this answer. I run SCSI in my rigs and my 39320 is for PCI/PCI-X, it runs in 64bit while in a PCI-X slot and 32bit in PCI. So, what card can I use in this MB? I want to run 64bit and 1 external 68pin and 2 internal 68pin ports. I have asked this question on another thread but it seems like this is the correct place to ask? Anything else you can tell me or others that are looking at buying this MB? What OC did you do and what are the settings including memory too. I have G.SKILL in my X38-DQ6 and Mushkin in all the other systems. I have a EVGA 8800GTS 640MB in this so do I get something different for the EX58?

Thanks, JASTECH

I returned the motherboard. I RMAed it and it still squealed, there is something wrong with the GIGABYTE EX58 boards. I am extremely happy with my MSI though.

Ouch, Well sense ClubIT went out of busniness it reduces places for us to purchases at lower prices. MWave is more expencive for what I need and most the other times they don't even carry it. Who is left other then NewwEgg and ZippZoomfly <-- that I have not been to in some time.

WFN, Glad you like what you have now. Anybody else with Gigabyte issues on this MB?

Thanks, JASTECH

Google "UD5 noise" or "UD5 squeal".

Here is a tid bit on it that should help maybe?

i have the x58 ud5 and a corsair 620 psu
had the high pitched squealing when first built system F3 bios
change to beta bios overclocked 920 to 4.2 and disable all the enhanced cpu features except enable all cores
the noise disappeared
have used various beta bios after that and found no problems
until now update to F5f and the noise return until overclocked and disable again all enhanced features
i would guess that the noise is someting to do with the cpu enhanced features which i always disable

Thanks, JASTECH
