Gigabyte EX58-Extreme strange noise

I have a Gigabyte EX58-Extreme mobo with a intel i7 920. I'll list the rest of my specs later if they prove to be relevant. Anyway, a couple of days ago I started to notice a "squeaking" noise coming from the machine. Kinda like the sound you get from cheap laptop PSU's when they are stressed. This made me fire up HWmon to see what my temps and voltages was at. I noticed that there was a temp probe labeled temp 3 that was reading 70C. This temp is twice that of most of the other readings in HWmon.

Monitoring this temp and letting the machine sit completely idle I noticed that after a while the temp would drop to 67C and that would also make the noise go away. I removed the side cover from my case and tried to listen o where this sound was coming from. It is almost impossible to pinpoint completely but it sounds like it is coming from somewhere between the GPU and the CPU.

Does anybody know what could be causing this squeaking noise? I'd also like to know what is measured on temp probe 3?

Its simply Inductor coils vibrating due to high load (i.e current) that's causing this "squealing noise". Its an issue plaguing some motherboards and video cards of past and present.

My 4870X2 has the same thing although it depends on load when I hear it the most. I don't think there much you can do about it- if it bothers you too much you could RMA it.

You could use super glue around the caps base if you find the right one...... Good luck.

I've heard that is an inherent problem with the Gigabyte X58 boards. Anyone else want to chime in on this? daw?

Nope, mine sounds as sweet as a nut (crosses fingers that it doesn't start to whine).

I had a similar experience where the noise (sounded like static that changed freq when under load) came from between the cpu area and the i/o ports at the back.
I had this mobo laid bare on the shelf so no case and disconnected all but the cpu+ cooler, hdd, ram and psu which weren't the casue of the noise.

Mine wasn't due to heat as it was between 40-60 degrees and the noise changed pitch if i launched a program etc but again wasn't the hdd or cpu/fan or psu.

The caps on this board are all solid and are there any coils??? not that i can see like the older boards.
I even contacted intel thinking it was a dodgy cpu but after replacing with another with the same issue thought definitely mobo.

Then a friend of mine said that it' probably the MOSFET (google it) and should be fine although I was still unnerved.

So eventually contacted Gigabyte tech and we did several checks. They said it could be caused by overclocking but then shortly he retracted this (thank God otherwise why bother?) so eventually they were stumped too so I RMA'd it...took 4 weeks and i have a new mobo...just hope it's sweet.

Apparently the software that came with it aren't with their salt so best download bios, driver etc updates from site.

Yeah so i agree if you're not happy RMA it.

Gigabyte ex58 extreme, intel i7920, 12gb ram, coolermaster v8 cpu cooler, 1tb hdd, coolermaster m700 psu, 2xintel gb nic (onboard suck -10) , no fancy graphics or case just yet (still saving) - any suggestions?
