Gigabyte EP45-UD3P fails to resume from sleep

I cannot get my Gigabyte EP45-UD3P to resume from S3 sleep.

Why do I need S3 and sleep, to save energy and to have instant on.

Whenever the system resumes from sleep it enters into an endless reboot sequence that requires the plug to be pulled before it will restart.

I've seen some mention of similar problems in other threads, but since it seems a peculiar problem, I though I would start a dedicated thread.

Here is my system (nothing is overclocked):
Gigabyte EP45-UD3P v1.1, F8F BIOS
Intel Q9650 3GHz CPU, Noctua NH-U12P cooler
G.Skill F2-8800CL5Q-8GBPI (4 x 2GB) DDR2-1100 PC2-8800, running at 1066
Visiontek ATI Radeon HD4850
Corsair HX620 PSU
Seagate ST3500320AS x 4, RAID10, 120GB, 800GB
Vista Ultimate x64 SP1

I also tried Mushkin XP2-8500 996599 memory, same problem.
I have not changed any BIOS advanced timing or voltage settings, I tried failsafe defaults and I tried optimized defaults.

Both the Mushkin and the G.Skill memory pass all memory tests.
The system runs 24x7 with prime and other stability testing apps.
The only thing that fails every time is resuming from sleep.

I wonder if it is a problem particular to 8GB RAM, or Q9650, or something else?

Has anybody with a EP45-UD3P been able to get their system to resume from S3 sleep?

Well to be frank the sleep mode on windows sucks and is horribly broken, unless im confusing it with the hibernate mode.

I find that sleep mode largely depends on the OS you are using. Later Vista and beyond works best. Also most distros of Linux works well.

I had a similar problem on my Gigbyte GA-M57SLI-S4 board. It drove me nuts for a while. Constant reboots after the S3 sleep mode. I gave up on it for a while and when I had to perform a BIOS upgrade for a CPU compatiblity after a CPU upgrade....suddenly the S3 sleep mode started working Ok. I have now heard that sometimes a BIOS upgrade works and sometime it does not for the sleep mode issues. But the OS version and patching affects it also. Plus your drivers for your hard drive and video card.

I am not aware of any "horrible" problems with Vista and sleep, I use it on 3 DELL notebooks, 2 DELL workstations, 3 Lenovo notebooks, 2 self built Intel mobo machines, 1 self built AOpen mobo machine, 1 self built Asus mobo machine, and 1 self built Gigabyte mobo machine, all using sleep, none requiring manual BIOS tweaking, and those with 4GB or less also hibernate, and no sleep problems.

While I appreciate OS problems, I can't get the EP45-UD3P to resume from sleep, and I'd like to keep the thread on that topic.

Hi gpgofats, have you ever tried with 8GB of RAM?

It's a known issue on the UD3R/P.

When i had my UD3P, i could not use sleep either.

Their are many users on XS in that huge thread there with the same issue.

Seems Gigabyte doesn't care to fix it, or cannot fix it, as it's been an issue from the beginning AFAIK.

Hi n7, thank you for your reply, I read that thread:
http://www.xtremesystems.org/F...d.php?t=205132&page=90
It is a huge thread dealing with all sorts of issues, and since I only have problems with sleep, I was hoping to get better tracktion with a dedicated thread.

I was also hoping that since AnandTech did a great review on the EP45-UD3P, but did not test S3, that potential buyers of this board should know of this problem, and ultimately I want a solution, either by changing some configuration, or Gigabyte fixing the problem.

S3 works for me on UD3P if keep my OC conservative. At some point, resuming from S3 craps out. It's pretty sad that I get a better overclock out of a cheap ECS motherboard than I do the Gigabyte because of the UD3P's S3 resume issue.

From what I've read, Gigabyte boards are well-known for S3 problems. The good news is that a BIOS update released last week for the UD3R says "Improve S3 resume compatibility." So hopefully something like that will be coming soon for the UD3P (unless it already has and didn't help at all).

How much memory do you have in your board, I'm wondering if it's an 8GB thing?

I have 2x2GB Ballistix

If you can test with 8GB, it would be interesting to know if it still works.

Hi, I also have this problem. I have the exact same problem as described in the OP. The computer will enter a continuous reboot when it tries to come out of S3. I have revision 1.1 of the board. Even with very mild chip temps I have S3 problems. Note that when I am not overclocking (nothing in MIT is modified) the computer comes out of S3. Are there any theories as to why it happens?
Also from what I remember there used to be a german website that always had the gigabyte beta bioses... does anyone remember the website I'm thinking of?

Mine works fine...Q9650, FSB of 430 and 4GB of ram. I have CIE1 enabled along with legacy usb.

I'm using 2GB ( 2 x 1GB ) of memory and I still have the problem.
Have you tried:
save your CMOS profile
remove some ram
load optimized defaults in bios
boot with standard settings
try S3

That works for me. All the OCs I tested and I cannot resume from S3. I really don't like testing this situation because it causes that continuous power up and almost like a short out, followed by reboot... rinse and repeat... unless I turn off the power supply directly.

I'm hoping there's some simple setting I can adjust or that it's a BIOS issue and not the board. It took me a while to get everything actually installed and in place. I'd hate to have to remove it for RMA.

i just like to drop by and leave my $.02. since i've been following this issue throughout various major forums and websites for months now. and it looks like even after 6 months Gigabyte still has shown no commitment in fixing it.

I've concluded that Gigabyte itself don't even know what the problem is. and their tech people are just opposite of helpful, they treat you like you've never used a computer before. face it, if you know enough to buy a board like the UD3P, you don't need other people to tell you how to set your clock speed correctly. that's like taking your ferrari to the mechanic and he's asking you "are you sure you know how to drive a stick?", we all know Gigabyte is no where near being Ferrari quality, none the less, the analogy still holds true.

i have decided this would be my first and last Gigabyte motherboard i will ever own. it seems they have similar problem throughout all their other model and product lines.

why is S3 such an important feature? because we live in a energy demanding world where the prices of energy has gone up 10 fold in the last decade. this makes every price conscious consumer care deeply about their energy consumption. and if your'e marketing your motherboard as one of the top notch tweakable motherboards out there, you have to be able to back it up. what's the use of having all these tweakability if the system cannot even resume from standby. that's like driving a 400hp ferrari, only everytime you turn it off and turn it back on it only has 200hp. again, analogy.

so i just have to say to Anatech that in the future when reviewing motherboard, please do us all consumer a favor, do it more thoroughly. because i definitely would NOT have bought this board if i knew for a second that this board could not resume from standby. compare to my two year old P5E by Asus, this this just pathetic. my P5-E can make breakfast compare to this.

I finally got S3 to resume on my UD3P. Followed the advice in this thread:
http://www.vistax64.com/tutori...eep-mode-problems.html

in BIOS (F6):
1. Enabled legacy USB for kb/mouse
2. Enabled PME event

in Vista:
1. Restored Hibernation file (link on how to do this in the thread above)
2. Used "Recommended Settings for Sleep"

I did all of these at the same time so I don't know which one did it. In addition, this is the first time I've tried in a few months, so it may have also been new nV or Creative drivers, who knows. I'm just stoked it's working.

FYI - Enabling the Hibernation file will eat up a chunk of HDD space the same amount as your ram: i.e. 4gb ram/4gb file on your hard drive. So I'll probably test to see if that was the culprit, and if not, delete it for good.

I was working on a how-to sticky for S3. That link will help a lot to organize what I squibbled. In the meantime, I suggest others take a look at the link zagood has posted.
