Question Gigabyte AMD X570 poor disk performance

New build:

Gigabyte AMD X570 MB
Ryzen 5 3600 processor
WD 1tb NVMe Gen 4 SSD

Getting horrible disk performance as measured with ATTO. The drive is rated at 7000/5300/mb read write but performs at 543/821mb read write

Same drive in my intel Z390 M/B performs at 3530/3107mb read write ( likely limited to the PCIe 3.0 bus )

I would have thought with the AMD M/B and PCIe 4.0, the performance of the drive would have exceeded in the AMD motherboard versus the Intel m/b. Yet the performance in the amd m/b is less and horrible.

Am I missing something?

Bothe m/b motherboards and drives are running at the latest bios.

I have a WD Black NVMe 2018 gen-3 SSD (predecessor to the SN750 model), and with my X470 motherboard I get pretty much the maximum performance out of it that it's rated for (3,400 / 2,800 MB/s).

Have you updated the motherboard's BIOS to the latest version?

The speeds you report make perfect sense.

Yes, the AMD X570 is updated to the latest bios as is the WD NVMe Gen 4.

Another exact drive in an Intel Z390 performs as expected, at about the speeds you reported.

What M.2 slot do you have it plugged into? Have you tried it in another M.2 slot (I assume your motherboard has at least two)? For that matter, what is the model number of motherboard so we can look at the detailed specs of it. The SSD drive you are using is the SN850, right?

Yes - WD SN850 1TB drive. Performance on the another exact same drive on my intel machine is blazing but limited by the PCIe 3.0 data bus. I had expected much better performance on the X570 board with it's PCIe 4.0 bus.

This must be a M/B related issue.

I may move the WD drive to my intel machine just to confirm that it does perform as expected.

Appreciate your help in sorting thru this issue.

Have you tried another SSD benchmark utility (like CrystalDiskMark) to see if maybe ATTO is having issues with its test?

My guess (outside of the SSD having issues / defective in same way), would be some weird compatibility issue between it and your particular motherboard. Gigabyte isn't the best when it comes to software/BIOS updates, so by testing it in another PC, you can rule the SSD out as being the issue.

I looked at the motherboard's manual, so the M2A slot is the one you want the drive installed in (which you said that is the one you are using).

I think you made the right call. CrystalDisk Mark reports performance at 6928 read and 5190 write. The drive is rated 7000 read and 5000 write in an PCIe 4.0 board. Looks like its running as advertised and the problem is with ATTO.

Do you think I would get a lot better performance if I ran 2 drives in raid? Wondering what the high end m/b you can get with a PCIe 4.0 board?

I recall my utter disappointment running 2 Samsung 970 pro drive NVMe drives in raid on my Intel board with barely a 10% performance improvement over a single drive. It proved to be a lesson in the limitations of PCIe 3.0

The only place you'd see a difference would be in synthetic benchmarks. Personally I wouldn't waste the money on running any fast NVMe drive in RAID, as the money could be spent on something like a nicer monitor, better speakers, etc. or something where you'd see an appreciable difference. NVMe 3.0 SSDs are lightning fast when doing anything where the speed is utilized, let alone 4.0 SSDs which are twice as fast as the prior generation.
