Gigabit with a mixed network

I'm trying to find a switch that can handle a mixed network well. I've been reading a lot of reviews about people getting gigabit switches and having them internally throwtle all traffic down to fast ethernet. I can understand slowing down between fast ethernet and gigabit but why slow down the gigabit to gigabit connection? Is there a switch out there "smart" enough to do this? the gigabit I have no cannot do this (some old d-link gigabit switch).

Any thoughts?
