Gigabit switch with 100mbit router?

If the only thing connected to my 100mbit router is a gigabit switch (and a 3mbps DSL connection on the WAN port), and all computers are connected to the gigabit switch, will I get gigabit transfers between all computers? Or do I still need to purchase a router with gigabit ports?

youll be limited by your slowest component. yes youll get your 1gbps local transfer from the computers to gigabit switch but after which, the speed will be 100mbps.

computers------1gbps------>gigabit switch------100mbps------->100mbps router

Traffic between computers with Giag NIC that are plugged to a Giga switch would be on a functional Giga level.

However be aware that Giga traffic when using Entry Level Hardware and client OS is Not 10 times 100Mb/sec.

On average people get about 3 times the "Speed" of 100Mb/sec. with a max. of about 46MB/sec. (B=Byte) transfer rate.

The article says "if your system is 100Mb/sec. and yields 10MB/sec. transfer, by replacing the NIC with Giga NICs and the Switch with Giga Switch the Network will probably yield 12.5MB/sec. to 15MB/sec. (if your hardware is fast)."

Is that still accurate? I like the sound of 46MB/s much better.

My goal is to increase transfer speed between a server running Win2K Server and 3 clients running WinXP Pro. I was planning on upgrading only those 4 clients to gigabit network adapters and leaving the rest of the clients on 100mbit.

It was written a while ago as people learn how to deal with Giga on average it gets into the 20 to 30MB/sec.

If all hardware involved is fast and configure optimally the number can go higher.

If people do large LAN transfers, No matter what the prices of Giga NICs and switches is low enough to ignore the name implication (Giga) and go for it even if it is only 3 times faster.

What is the optimal way to configure the Win2k Server and WinXP Pro clients with Giga NICs? (MTU, TCP RWIN, etc.?) My unmanaged gigabit switch (Netgear JGS24) says on the product box that it supports Jumbo Frames

And does the way I configure the computers with Giga NICs change because there are still 100mbit clients on the same network?
