gigabit ethernet

Ummm, you have it backwards. 100mbit ethernet runs at a max of ~12 megabytes per second. Average hard drives read/write at about 25 megabytes per second.

When you switch to gigabit, you no longer have that bottleneck. It has a bandwidth of 1000 megabits or roughly 120 megabytes per second. Now you can transfer files between computers at the same speed the hard drives can read/write.

Streaming movies takes up about 2 megabytes per second of bandwidth.

I do both of the above and I've noticed a HUGE difference. File transfers are a sh!t load faster now. Basically, unless you do heavy file transferring, don't invest in gigabit.

I use it between my workstation and server to move large video files. Definately faster than 100Mbit.

Unless you move around large files there's really no need for it.

this is it 🙂 the files need to be large to gain. if you have 1000 small files you will probably not see a benefit but if you have 10 1GB files you will see a huge benefit.

10x 1GB files??? I scoff at thee!!! Try moving 8GB DVD rips from one computer to another! 😉

Yes, Xgamer11, if you are moving great big files, then gigabit is the way to go. Don't forget to get a gigabit switch as well...

Also, look at using Jumbo Frames...will speed up your gigabit transfer speeds even more.

I do a ton of large file transfers...are they any cheap gigabit routers out there?

price is probably coming down by now. and yea, its nice, 100mb/s not enuogh for todays drives. but its enough for streaming video
