Giga Switch and Cabling

Guys I tried to find this out on my own, but it doesn't look like I'm able to. So on with my question. I'm looking at purchasing a new 24port Giga Switch from Dell. Can I plug standard Cat5 rj45 cables in to this beast or will I have to replace all my cable?

GigaSwitch has RJ45 ports? Then I don't see why not cat5.

Standard CAT5 Cable works with Gigabit Ports, as long as the ends have been 'ended' correctly. Standard European is from left to right, light orange, orange, light green, blue, light blue, green, light brown, brown. If its straight through cabling it will not work.

😕 So if the cable I use now works in a 10/100 switch it should work in the 10/100/1000 switch giving me the 1000mb connection speed (I know I will not see this rate)?

You can try and use a Cat5 cable...A simple patch cable you probably won't have any errors. But I would recommend cat5e or even better cat6.

Standard Cat5 WILL work, but you will have to take your chances on getting the full bandwidth. But if you have Cat5e it will most defiantly work and probably at the gigabit speeds. So long as (like Allan The Shield said), all your terminations are correct. That means at the RJ45 end and the punched down end.

If I had the money, I?d get a gigabit switch and chance it. The 24 ports is worth it by itself.
