gig-e switch? pcmcia card that does 1000? exist?

Ya, i need some help. There is this piece of equipment that only takes gig-e 1000 mpbs
and all i have on my laptop is 100. Is there a hub that is say 10/100/1000 ? Then i can 'convert' it down to connect. Right now i have to use serial connection and that is quite slow.

or a hub with even 100/1000 only.

I'd like to spend less than $100 if possible. Thanks much

How about a PCMCIA card that does 1000base?
Or one of those USB internet connection deals that i can use. I just need to be able to communicate with the equipment. I know it will only go at 480mbps but i will be able to communicate with it atleast. THANkS GUYS, i appreciate it!

are you telling me no one knows? liers. please help me out, or tell me a nic card i could put in my laptop that does gig-e as i looked and couldn't find one :(

alright, thanks much, for gigabit switches, any under 100 as i dont have much time to search right now

alright, thanks much, i gota connect to a piece of hardware and it only outputs at 1000 but then i can just 'resize' it to connect to my laptop, ie go from 1000 -> 100 into the laptop

uhh, not sure what you mean, i've never seen anything that was soley 1000, and not 10/100/1000. usually if you connect to a 100 mb network the gigabit parts will just slow down to the 100mb standard.

(i could be mistaken, since i have definately not seen all the networking hardware out there) but if 100 will work you can save a ton by just getting a 100 switch. usually you can get these babies for $10-20 after rebates if you look.

Edit: thinking about this some more... i really think you must be mistaken about the 1000 only bit. if it were connected a 100 laptop to it through a 100/1000 switch it wouldn't work either, since the switch dsnt convert the signal to a slower speed, it would just sent it through at 1000 and your connection wouldnt work.


save some money and get a 10/100 switch, or better yet a router : )

BTW, what is this hardware that is 1000 only?

All gigabit ethernet switches I've seen are 10/100/1000. It make's sense, since switches should always be backwards compatible.

ya, i believe i need a 10/100/1000 and i dont need search bitches. I just thought some people might know.

ComCast has something called VOD, video on demand. And for me to get into the servers, all they have a gig-e ports. :(
is there a pcmcia card that does 1000?

The only reason that it might say that it has to be 1000Base T or 1000Mbps. Is that it is fibre (not very likly) Or it uses jumbo frames (strange thing to do). Just use a normal 100mbps line and see if it works. It might help if you tell us what it is you are trying to connect.

The in fact do not exist at this time...
We were told last year that Netgear was going to have one made by the start of this school year, that never happened...
(problem w/ this is that i am on 1Gbit Fiber and the media converters to copper are 1Gbit to 1Gbit (no 100Mbit support) so laptops w/o built in GigE are screwed)

well thanks much guys, i did a bunch of searching and found nothing has a gig-e for laptop :(

i am going to just get teh switch i guess, but i didnt really want that, but its my only option. Thanks much guys. i appreciate it
