Pffffft, like if you were in that fisherman's place, you geniuses was magically know the island was part of the Komodo reserve. The Komodo islands look completely different than normal islands, right? 🙂

Two words: Komodo turds.

also, as a big lizard owner, i dont think i would even try to infiltrate a place dominated by huge, poisonous things called dragons. and i think they are one of the most interesting creatures ive seen.

Braggart.

nah, not really. hes only big, not huge. i was just making the differentiation between someone that is afraid of lizards and someone who is not. and to qualify as a braggart, id have to have had a history of telling this forum that i have a big lizard. there may be a couple, but by no means qualified as bragging a lot.

Bodies in the sand
Tropical drink in your melting hand
We'll be falling apart
To the rhythm of a steel drum band
Down in Komodo!

I was under the impression that komodo dragons are not venomous, but there was so much nasty shit in their mouths that the bizarre strains of bacteria they left behind in a bite would kill their victims for them.
That's what I thought as well.
Their mouth is like a festering pit filled with rotting animal flesh, and then they rub it into your bloodstream, courtesy of lots of teeth.

yup. They're also the only animal that actively hunts humans.

Really? I think no animals (as species, not individually) that come into regular contact with humans are stupid enough to hunt humans. Probably these komodos don't come into contact with us that often and we don't kill them, being protected.
Even all the deadly, "scary" animals like lions, and tigers, and bears (oh my!) and sharks don't actively hunt humans. The occasional idiot individual might, or take a bite by accident, but the species generally don't.

Actually, I believe the number of people who die as a result of animals that actively hunt humans numbers in the millions.

damn, owned by Komodo Dragons in a restricted area. I believe Darwin Award nomination is called for.

Well in his defense, Komodo Dragons are pretty deadly.

He should get a Darwin nomination at least though.

Whut? Didn't I say Darwin Award nomination?

See bolded.

I disagree.

But in reality, he should probably get a nomination for the Darwn Award.

I must be stuck in the Twilight Zone...

Venom and bacteria
A sleeping Komodo dragon. Its large, curved claws are used in fighting and eating.

In late 2005, University of Melbourne researchers concluded that the perentie (Varanus giganteus), other species of monitor, and agamids may be somewhat venomous. The research team showed that the immediate effects of bites from these lizards were caused by mild envenomation. Bites on human digits by a lace monitor (V. varius), a Komodo dragon, and a spotted tree monitor (V. scalaris) were observed, and all produced similar results in humans: rapid swelling within minutes, localized disruption of blood clotting, shooting pain up to the elbow, with some symptoms lasting for several hours.[24] It has been proposed that all venomous lizards, together with their nonvenomous relatives and all snakes, share a common venomous ancestor.[24]

Komodo dragons also possess virulent bacteria in their saliva, of which more than 28 Gram-negative and 29 Gram-positive strains have been isolated.[25] These bacteria cause septicemia in their victim; if an initial bite does not kill the prey animal and it escapes, it will commonly succumb within a week to the resulting infection. The most harmful bacterium in Komodo dragon saliva appears to be a deadly strain of Pasteurella multocida, from studies performed with laboratory mice.[26] There is no specific antidote to the bite of a Komodo dragon, but it can usually be treated by sterilizing the wounded area and giving the patient large doses of antibiotics. If not treated promptly, gangrene can quickly develop around the bite, which may require amputation of the affected area. Because the Komodo dragon appears immune to its own microbes, much research has been done searching for the antibacterial molecule(s) in the hopes of human medicinal usage.[27]

they also have really powerful tails and claws.

Steve Irwin almost got taken down by one a few years back (before the stingray did him in). He got up a tree just in time. Can't find the video right now, but he was yelling a few more things than "crickey!" at the time 🙂

Those dragons are the top dogs in their area, so they attack and try to eat anything that moves. About as close to a real monster as you can get.

in the long run any animal that aggressively goes after humans becomes extinct😉

Yep, pretty much.
There's a difference between "hunting" and "defending territory and young". There are animals that will snatch a baby or small child if desparate, there are animals that will attack humans if they are starving, but there aren't any predators of humans except in areas with minimal human-animal contact. Crocodiles, for instance, will attack people. But in the long run, either animals learn not to hunt humans, or they become extinct.
