Ghosting, HDDs, and RAID

Is this a good policy?

2x10Krpm 150GB SCSI HDDs in RAID 0.
1x External 7200rpm drive, 500GB.

Set to ghost backup every night + incremental backups as the system changes.
The ghost is set to ghost to an external HDD that is only programmed to backup overnight, every night (eg: 2 - 4am). Power to the external HDD is regulated by a timer, which only keeps the external on from 1:50am - 4:10am to minimize data loss over time.

Of course all power is connected to UPS.
Is this a good method to optimize speed and performance, along with data recovery?

First: I had an external HDD fail on me that was set as backup medium. Make sure to test it thoroughly every now and then to see if it's okay and always read the backup software log. How is it connected to your rig (USB, firewire, ...)?

Secondly: If data survival is a real concern of yours, add a tape backup and take one tape per week offsite, since a fire or water (say, a broken pipe or so) will pretty much still take all the data, even with your current setup.

Well the HDD is connected via USB 2.0. I understand the need for tapes but it is in my own house, about 5 feet from my bed. If a fire were to occur I would get the heck out of there.

But seriously, how is that for a policy? Well crafted?
