Ghosting drive

Situation:

Aging 120GB drive, currently one 30GB partition.
Shiny new 250GB drive, currently one 30GB partition and larger data partition.

Both IDE, both on same channel.

After a lot of messing about i've managed to ghost a copy of my HD across to the 250GB drive, however when i removed the old one and set the new one as a master i got a BIOS error message, something to do with failing to find a disc.

In short i can't boot my computer with the new drive as a master. I'm obviously doing something wrong but i have no idea what. Suggestions on what i might be doing wrong or ways to find out more precisly welcomed.

Edit: I think i set the jumpers right, but it's not impossible i screwed up. If it's going to be of help i can get an exact error message.

You need to change the boot.ini file, I think.

Make sure it is pointing to the right drive letter, etc.

I have a machine here with one WD drive. The OS was installed but would only boot from the BIOS. The jumper was set to master. The jumper was removed and that solved the problem.

I think i tried it without any jumper, but it started throwing a tantrum whenever the jumpers weren't set so that the old one was the master.

Right, i've got the boot.ini file info from microsoft, although i'm slightly (read very) worried about messing with these sort of settings. I'm going to check my knoppix live CD is working before i do anything else.

Nah, i've got the windows guide, and it's pretty easy to do so. Just hate messing around with the interesting bits of the OS.

I'm off to edit the boot.ini file and reboot. If i'm not back in half an hour the machine is taking longer to boot than normal.

make sure the partiton you are trying to boot from is set to "active"

You shouldn't need to do anything if you used the CLONE function.

"Ghosting" (Norton Ghost)? a drive partition to another is not transferring - it is creating an image - usually compressed at least 1/3. The image can then be RETURNED to original HDD. In other words - a backup.
This is one of the great confusions in the PC world.
An image is for backingup and restoring, not for using as is, UNTIL it is reinstalled somewhere.

You need to copy - clone - as was said

Bozo is quite correct .... if you were just moving the entire drive to a new drive, you would first format & partiton it (if you wanted)
then use Ghost's Clone feature to move to the new drive

If all you did is create a Ghost backup image (files are .gho) ... then you Can Not Boot from that
That type of Image is used when your computer crashes & you run Ghost to do a Restore
Alll is then back to the way it was on the date the Image was Made

Yeah i set it to copy rather than backup. However I think i failed to set it as the active partition. (Stupid me, should have read the frigging manual ).

Gah, that didnt' work. Could be that i'm messing it up on the jumpers after all. At the moment it's booting from the new drive, but it's set to boot from HD ID 1 rather than 0. So i think i need to reset the jumpers so the old is the master and the new is the slave. Repeat the copy process and then change the jumpers back to their current settings.

Oh and i need to put the boot.ini file back to what it was orriginally and make the old disc the active partition again. But it's all for tomorrow, as i'm off to bed.

How old is your computer? Go get the latest BIOS for it. Theres a chance your BIOS is to old to recognize a 250GB drive.

Put Norton Ghost in the dust bin and get a good cloning program - Acronis TrueImage or the freebie from a HDD OEM.

The BIOS is fine, the error is EBCAC based.

I agree I do that from time to time, but I try not to admit that fact too often. People might think I'm getting older.

When I use Ghost to mirror/clone a drive, and I intend to use the new drive to boot, I put the new drive as master on the primary IDE and the old drive as master on the secondary channel. When done, I remove the old drive and reconnect my optical drives. Works every time with good drives.
