Yikes, probably pirates. I have read that the authorities are having a hard time cracking down on them in in the south east asia areas.

And elsewhere. Yes there are still pirates running about the world. Most veteran skippers who travel to international desinations carry weapons of some type, just make damned sure you don't go into the ports of foreign countries with strict gun control, you might find yourself spending some time in their prisons. There are several cases of Americans serving prison time in some screwed-up country because port authorities searched their boats and found a prohibited rifle or handgun that was carried on-board for protection.

There is also a lot of corruption in parts of the world. You may be arrested, jailed for a week, threatened in various ways, before being allowed to speak with an attorney or make any phone calls. The police authority might then make you an offer you can't refuse: be convicted of illegal weapons possess and spend 10 years rotting in their prisons, or you can pay a "fine" of $50,000 US dollars and go on your merry way (without your weapon), wired to the personal account of the police chief, of course, and told never to return.

A friend of the family has a 53' sail boat and sails all over the world in that sucker. He takes an AR15 rifle in .308 and several loaded 30-round clips with him.
