Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter

Its rare I pick up a game and give it only 5 minutes before thinking 'screw this', but that's what just happened. Why do people rave about this thing and compare it to FEAR and such? It's nowhere close to that game!

Firstly, this rifle, it takes up a full quarter of the screen and I'm not exaggerating. That wouldn't be quite so bad if it looked good but it doesn't. Not in the slightest. Especially the hand holding it. The scope is the worst thing - its the size of an astronomical telescope and it gives me what? 1.5x magnification? Gee thanks...

Why do I move like a freakin snail? I swear I walk 2 or 3 times faster than this guy in real life and he's supposed to be a elite soldier! The so called 'sprint' is more like a leisurely jog than a run of any kind. If you're going to have jogging in the game, fine, but let me fire my weapon for god's sake! If I'm running so fast I can't hold a rifle I should clear the length of that truck in like 3 or 4 strides. Try crouching down, looking at the ground, and moving - you cover the length of one of those little curb stones in about a second... thats one foot per second... there are tortoises that crawl faster than that! Seriously!

And why can I slide on my ass? Why?!? Have you ever seen a special forces soldier slide down a concrete path on his ass? I sure haven't. And why does it throw up a cloud of dust every time I do this, regardless of the surface? Does this guy have a special ablative ass shield or something?

i hate those type of games.

i totally agree with the slowness i movement. its like everything is in slow-mo or they're 90 years old.

the enemies don't seem to have any problems running around though.

I played this game for 15 minutes at a friends house a few months ago. It seemed okay, but I wouldn't buy it. I was glad I didn't waste $50 on it.

Did you play the XBOX360 version or the PC version. They are both quite different. Please specify which version you're talking about.

I thought it was awsome. Not as good as the first Ghost Recon but still great.

You gotta give the game more than 15 minutes. It's the kinda game that has a longer learning curve and you won't really enjoy it until you get into it. It's totally different from normal FPS games like FEAR so comparing them is pointless. What's really great about ghost recon games is you can control your entire squad like an RTS game.

I thought the game was terrible. All you did was send your stupid squad peoples infront of you to make sure you didn't get pwnz0r3d by t3h baddies.

Terrible. The graphics looked like regurgitated crap from 2002, no real AA. Movement speed terrible. Impossible controls. I really wish they just did a straight port of the 360 version.

I didn't think it was that bad?

I do find that actually moving your people around and trying to move yourself around was somewhat difficult.

The scope is to scale to your rifle, and both except for the one on the M107 are red dot sights, so its actually 1x magnification.

Movement pace seems to be real. I don't see a problem with diving and sliding.

As always, the PC Ghost Recon has always catered to a more narrow audience. If you think you run too slow I'm sure you can run faster in other shooters.

The PC release is practically the XBOX release, though apparently the maps have changed slightly.

loved the originals on the PC a few years back

not like a first person shooter where you run around, this one you need strategy and you have to position your men properly

PC version - I can't play FPS on consoles, the gamepad is just too inaccurate for me.

The scope is to scale to your rifle

Yea but the rifle isn't to scale with your field of view. A rifle should not obscure your vision unless you are actually holding it to your shoulder and firing it.

Movement pace seems to be real.

No way! Perhaps the walking speed really is that of an average person (although I doubt it), but even if it is, who the hell strolls like an average person in a situation like that? The default should be a kind of jog or fast walk from which I can fire a weapon. If I want to move slowly and quietly or something I'll tell it to do that.

And yea - I didn't even mention the graphics. I wasn't impressed, but honestly, I wouldn't care if I thought the game was fun.

Technically, it was a third-person shooter........ 😉 😛

yeah, you gotta give it more than 15 minutes.
I didnt like it at first either but once I got past the first campaign it gets better.
Not crazy about the 1x scope. I havent even dug far enough into it to see if there are any better/different weapons

...I loved it. The demo totally sold me. It was the first game I actually wanted to replay in the past few years.

Having said that, there are an assload of problems even an "ass shield" couldn't stop from being seen. Multiplayer is a joke with rampant spawn killing. I quit specifically cause my entire team got spawn 'aped for about ten minutes. All the models seem to be very stalky, but they move fast enough. Weapon variety kinda sucks, and it is a bit on the hard side (I like it, but others can't stand it).

Atheus:

True, perhaps there should be an option to port your rifle, but GRAW is supposed to be a high-speed/CQC/MOUT type shooter; you're not marching long distances to reach and engage an enemy; you are already there, and you are amongst your enemy, best to keep your rifle at the ready.

Keep in mind the soldier you're attempting to simulate is probably wearing things, such as armor, ammunition, a helmet. If you jog, it becomes incredibly difficult to even use the sights on your weapon, in fact, without something like a red dot sight, it becomes impossible.

If you want to run through the levels, I don't think you'll have too much success with this game. It's really hard to detect where the enemies are, and most maps are open urban areas with a lot of places to hide, and thus the slow, careful pace.

Graphics weren't jaw droppingly revolutionary, but they were good at simulating large areas; I do agree that to run the game at its intended level of graphical detail (max everything) takes a system few of us have. But I was impressed with the physics.

I have GRAW, and I like it. Sure, the walk speed is kinda slow, and the no-shooting while running sucks, I see no problem with the ass-slide maneuver, and overall the game is good.
I however, did not pay for it. I installed ot froma friends disc, then patched it for no-CD play.
