Ghost from mobo cd

I have a version of Ghost that came on my Epox motherboard cd, it is just the read .exe and the write .exe (the folder is labelled Norton 2001, subfolder ghost 603). I have one HD, a plextor cdrw and a cd drive. I want to make a bootable cd with ghost HD image but my ghost does not have any utility for making a boot floppy. The startup disk win98se makes doesn't have room, and the when I use a plain startup disk w/ ghost on it, or boot from floppy and run ghost from cd, it does not recognize the cd drives or returns an error 10010 ("you are trying to use or create an image").

I have already read the Radified faq and looked at Symantec pages but according to them it should be working. My plex 8/4/32 is on the compatible list, how do I either get a boot floppy that will recognize the cd drives or run ghost from cd without an error? I tried a couple bootdisks from bootdisk.com or whatever, same deal.

I don't know what the differences are with the freebie version you got. The normal version should give you an option from within the program to make the image cd bootable. Look for that option when you make the image. Ah, wait a minute, I'm sure it won't do it. It asks for the ghost boot disk for the boot files. If your version doesn't make boot disks, i'm sure that feature has been removed but who cares? You have a backup.

You will have to copy the ghostpe.exe to a floppy. Boot with a win98 boot disk that enables your cd-rom. Then put in the ghost floppy and run ghost and you can restore an image. Not making it bootable is probably one of the limitations of the free version. Or you could boot from win98 floppy, run ghost from your cd-rom off the mobo disk and restore the image from your cd-rw.

You can also delete enough of a win98 boot disk to fit ghost on it if you want. I can't remember exactly what to delete but I think I read about it somewhere in the Radified faq's. If not, someone here will know.

Maybe try bootdisk.com for a ghost boot disk..think i got one from there.

-side note..I got the Ghost on a CD w/my Biostar board..also came with Norton AV.
I was able to make a bootable CD with the ghost.exe file that came with the board.

Good luck, I remember I had to do some reading on it and some trial and error!

It can't be done directly to cd without the full versioin. Ghost will only burn an image to a completely blank cd so you can't even add startup files first. You have to buy it or boot with a floppy.

Sorry, maybe I should clarify..I made a image with the Ghost that came on my CD..I didnt directly make a CD with it, sorry

You can make an image using -split=640 command
Then make a bootable cd using Nero or CDRwin, making sure you put a copy of the read ghost.exe on the the first cd.
That is a simple way to make a ghost restore disk.
There is a detailed tutorial on how to make a more comlex bootable ghost restore disk here. Following directions you can restore with one click.
Just make sure you put the read ghost.exe on it.

Thanks for the replies. So if I understand right the version I have will only create an image, not burn it to a blank cd? And since it can't create the image in the drive thats being ghosted, and I don't have a second HD... I am SOL? Well thats a pisser, I believed bundled software was actually including something of value for once. It wasn't the key factor, but I was actually taking the free ghost into account in picking this motherboard. Nice of them to not bother with a readme saying that so I wasted all these hours researching and experimenting.

As Bglad said, you'll need the ghost.exe file to be on a floppy disk. Boot with your nomal Windows startup floppy, then pop in the floppy containing ghost.exe, run it and you're off.

When you're creating an image in Ghost, does the Plextor CD-RW drive show up in the destination drive listing? If so, then you should be able to create the image on CD no problem.

No, I'm SOL. Even though the Ghost folder on my mobo cd said Norton 2001, the subfolder said Ghost 603. And I found confirmation at Symantec that this version can't burn to cd:

This error can occur when you use Ghost 6.01 - 6.04 to save an image file directly to a CD-R or CD-RW drive. Only Symantec Ghost 6.5 and Norton Ghost 2001 can write directly to CDR/RW drives.

I don't have a second HD. If I created a second partition on my one HD would I have to lose everything on there now?

You'd need to use a third-party app like Partition Magic to resize without losing your data.

If you are really worried about security backup on another partition of the same hard drive is not a backup. Yes, it will let you reinstall if you do something to screw it up. But in case of virus, drive failure, etc. your backup will be gone along with your primary data.

Keep your freebie version of Ghost and go buy another hard drive with a removeable bay for backup. Problem solved.

Here is what I suggest you do. Put the ghost cd in the cdrom drive and look at the PDF file. I have the same cd that you have and I have no problem backing up to CD and splitting it up into 2 cd's. It will write directly to cd or to another partition or even another computer on a lan.

Bleep, obviously you don't have the same one. It is not a ghost cd, it is an 8KHAL motherboard cd. Mine does not have a PDF file, and as the Symantec knowledgebase I quoted makes clear, version 6.03 will not write to cd.
