Ghetto DS3 NB Mod

I needed a NB HSF to keep the tempts down on the OC, but don't wanna drop $20 on one, so I took the 60mm fan from an AMD retail HSF and strapped it to the DS3 NB heatsink. This should work out nicely... if it doesn't fall off.

LOL Yeah looks totally ghetto. I was going to mount a small fan there but small fans are real noisy. How does mounting a fan there work? Looks real close to the video card that the intake wouldnt be that good?

That's beyond Ghetto. It's just fugly

IMHO that isn't a very effective cooling method. Something like a Swiftech MCX159 on the NB would do a far better job.

I think you've managed to miss the point of the exercise somewhat, or indeed totally

Nah, I see his point. Nothing wrong with trying to save a few bucks. I just find it too ... Ghetto ... for my liking

I think the point was to actually make it as ghetto as possible

I'll let you guys know if this mod actually works. May have to strap a 120mm to it if the 60mm is too loud.

This won't work! When you put your video card in that pcie slot, you'll figure out not only it's too noisy but doesn't push much air over the hs.

Actually i'm doing something similar, using the amd stock fan to cool the voltage regulators on my ultra-d. Its using screews into the sonic tower.
Mine doesnt look as ghetto as that though

Baked, glue that 60mm fan directly to the top of the heatsink. You'll not only get below 30°C temps (mine is at 27°C right now), but it will look just fine, too. I have a 5000 rpm 40mm fan glued to the top of my NB's passive heatsink.

edit: Congrats on achieving the ghetto look, though. I wasn't that successful. Mine just looks like somebody added a 40mm fan.:roll:

I'd recommend small screws or zip ties > glue of any form.

That's because you've never tried it. Elmer's glue is very strong, but can be removed at any time, were the fan to fail.

edit: Just don't try using superglue. I do use superglue, but only between the penny that I always glue to the bottom of the fan, and the fan. Then, I use Elmer's between the penny and the heatsink. I've been using that same technique for about 6 or 7 motherboards, and never had a problem, even when one of the 40mm fans died, and had to be replaced.

You're right. Somehow the idea of using Elmer's glue in a $2500 machine seems a bit... absurd?

That, and I like confidence in the mounting system. I'll trust my screws over your Elmer's Glue any day of the week

I used glue of heatsinks before, later i realised that the darn things produced fumes, i was wondering why i was feeling a bit wierd . Not doing that again. lol

I was gonna use zip tie, but don't know where I place them. I'll keep looking. The "air space"above the NB is very tight. It's smack right between the back of the video card and the giant CPU heatsink. I'm gonna have to use a 40mm, but 60mm looks so ghetto. I gotta have the ghetto.

Damn, forgot all about this thread. So I got my new system all setup today. Doing 8x400 @ 3200 and running Orthos for the past 4+ hours. The NB is not hot at all. Maybe a little warm. I cleaned the NB and SB heatsinks last night and applied AS5 on them. Looks like my ghetto NB mod's a :thumbsup:
