I bought an Abit AB9-Pro mobo for my son (18) so that he could build his own PC. Well, everything went fine and it ran great for a couple of days until I plugged in my external USB hard drive. Nothing happened. Then tried the USB drive in my own PC, and it told me it there was a problem with the USB. The drive is now toast. Here's what happened...
My son had plugged a USB front panel cable into a firewire header. This is easily done because the Firewire sockets are exactly the same 9-pin keyed plug. I assume that the power lines on the Firewire socket are in the same position as the signal lines on the USB socket, which makes the choice of using the same connectors just asking for trouble. Why, for the love of God, do they do that?! Is this an Abit thing, or is it an industry standard?
