GFWL Rant

I purchased GTA4 and the DLCs during the last Steam Sale. It seemed like a steal for 10 bucks. That was until my first experience below.

It took an hour to download everything, but once that was through I was able to start up the game. I left my computer and got some water, thinking that it would load up by the time I got back. Instead, I saw a registration pop-up for rockstar games, saying that I needed to fork over my info with them and create a new account.

10 minutes later, I've made a new account and try again to start the game. This time, I encounter a GFWL pop-up immediately when I try to start the campaign, The Lost and the Damned. I need to create a new account and copy over my serial!

15 minutes later and after several browser pop-ups for silverlight, installing GFWL and other bull, I finally star the campaign. I wait five minutes before the intro cinematic is over only to be told by GFWL that I need to apply an update. Oh, and it also forgot my login details.

10 minutes later, I start the game once again, put my login info in once again and get to the same point. Same pop up shows up again.

20 minutes later (I leave to check my email and do something else), I come back and try it again. After putting my login details for the 3rd time (they should develop some form of Autofill!!!) I manage to play through the first mission of the campaign before GFWL tells restarts my computer.

1 minute later, I start the game up and put in my login details for the 4TH TIME only to notice that the game has forgotten all of my progress. I am forced to watch a ridiculous 5 minute cinematic once again and play through a monotonous driving mission again.

20 minutes later, GFWL tells me that I have been signed out and need to log back in. For the fifth time, I put my credentials in. GFWL tells me that I need to redownload my profile, but needs to restart before this is possible.

1 second later, I bring up the task manager, kill EFLC.exe (the game) and start to type this post.

Sigh.

/shrug I've never run into any of the problems that people hate GFWL for. And I don't remember ever having to type my username and password after the first time.

I had a similar experience when I first purchased the game. Get xliveless. It stops GFWL from running with the game (and removes the Rockstar Social Club requirement believe).

Ya, GFWL is complete Fail. I didn't have that experience, but after Updating GTA IV it would always Crash when I went to Play. I Googled, tried all sorts of suggestions, then at my wits end I decided to check for a GFWL Update. Tada, game works fine. Not once was there any indication of a Need or even Availability of an Update. Shoddy piece of crap that Microsoft shouldn't "fix", it should just Quit.

I had a similar problem with Batman: Arkham Asylum. More frustrating than a bad Portal knockoff. My eventual solution was to install GFWL straight from its website, not using the games.

All I recall about GFWL was problems. Truly shocking that it was implemented so poorly. I would avoid it at all costs.

$15 is a "steal?" GTA IV on PC is $14.xx at Walmart right now.

I had nearly the same experience trying to play GTA4. I didn't hate DRM that much until I tried to play Dragon Age and now GTA4. Both have some horrificly draconian DRM, and I will avoid EA and GFWL games for the near future at least (until I hear they have been fixed).

I used to be neutral to GFWL, but that has changed recently. I was on my third season in F1 2010.. and somehow I managed to corrupt the boot sector while installing Linux OS(stupid on my part). So.. I just reinstalled Win 7..all my Steam games are in a secondary HDD and Win 7 autmatically backup's all the save files and folders. I was able to import all other save files (Darksiders, Amnesia, Magicka,.. ) the only games I could import my progress were fucking GFWL games(DiRT 2, Batman: AA, F1 2010, GTA IV).. now my 2.5 season's worth of progress is lost.

Yeah, I have avoided buying $2 and $3 games when I found out they were GFWL. Not worth the hassles possible. GTA4 *might* have been a playable game without it.

I had my first run-in with GFWL when I bought Bioshock2 recently. Same similar experience. What a pain in the ass.

I had similar problems with GTA4. Started it up, "suggested" I create a GFWL profile. I dont. I play for for a bit (hour or two), game says I need a GFWL profile to save. So I create profile, enter my info ingame, and they f*cking game kicked me out so it could start over with the profile, losing all progress.

Was there really anyone asking for a Live experience on PC? PC gamers like quicksaving, server browsers, and customization. How hard is it to not f up one of those three?
