Well, last night my gf's computer (laptop) was acting wacky. She said its been slow and takes like 10 min to load windows xp for like 3 months and she got it around MArch. She Also said the thing shuts off randomly on her. I went in and saw the usual crap like gator, weather bug, aol junk plus other stuff so i unistalled it like usual. I rebooted then stared shutting of in msconfig stupid programs not need to load during startup. Rebooted and bam, i log into windows and the who thing freezes 1 min in. I rebooted many times and same thing. I next booted into safe mode and everything works. Unchecked more startup items in msconfig and still no go in normal windows, booted into safe and repeated. Finally after rebooting one time right after the bios load screen when it attemps to go to the windows load screen, it shuts off. Powered on same thing! It happened like50 times. I felt the bottom of the laptop around the battery (she has it plugged into wall as well) and dam that thing was hot aalong with the bottom fan. I left it be for an hour to cool and rebooted into safe mode wheres she's been for a while. What do you think? I was gonna say reformat the sucka

I would try reformatting yes and if that doesn't do the trick I think there might be a power problem with the laptop and you should replace it.

Just put in XP CD and run the recovery option, not the first screens one but the one that says install XP and then you will get a screen that says repair XP or fresh install. Then select the repair option.

But I think that your gf's dell's problem is overheating, is the fan still working where it is hot?

few things....

My idiot bro and sis have things like this happen all the time

you're gonna want to adaware and spybot the hell out of that thing, update your antivirus... and scan again

i'd get a small firewall or netstat type program to check for any worms, and look in your processes for anything that stands out...

running scandisk is also good to test for worms (worm should be operating fast enough, writing to disk that it will continuously interrupt a scandisk)...

Chances are its all spyware...

Windows update that bitch toO!

is it real xp or a hackt version?!

Maybe she has got the blaster virus on, that causes a lot of instability
Blaster does not cause instability. It forces a shutdown of your computer, which isn't the problem as I read it. Freezing/crashing is not the same as a forced shutdown via RPC.

Anyhow, Ad-Aware and/or Spybot - Search and Destroy are a good way to go. I have found that laptops usually feel hot to the touch, but that's often because the components are so much closer to the outer case than on a desktop, so I don't think heat is an issue. I'd bet on spyware, make sure you run updated versions of AdAware/Spybot. And make sure her Windows Updates are up to date.

I would try running CPU burn or Prime95 before you attempt to do that. I believe it is a hardware problem.

only plausible hardware problem I could think of is an overheating critical system component, i.e. northbridge, CPU, or malfunctioning RAM/CPU/HDD.

nevertheless a "burn-in" would not solve a thing. it would just crash the computer faster.

oh, wait, this is a laptop. ok. the above still stands, though.

sounds like spyware/virus, and if that doesn't work, try a system restore to four months ago.

My neighbor lady was having the same problem and it was her fault, she would lay in bed with her laptop on a pillow which shut off all the cooling air to her machine.

Sometimes hardware is just f*cked and it has nothing to do with heat. Also, it would indeed go a long way in solving the problem because it would diagnose the problem and proscribe a warranty return.
