At my mom's house (even safer than here), there were only 4 or so hours in the day when nobody was home... and we got robbed then. Somebody always stakes you out first... it's hardly random. A few blocks down from her, someone was robbed while they went out. A neighbor witnessed a gray van parked nearby with 2 men just calmly walking in the front door while the driver stayed. They knew he was gone at that particular time. Of course he called the cops but it was too late.

Alarms are deterrents... they don't allow thieves to take everything inside while an alarm is blaring and neighbors are around.

with all the burglaries there, i would hardly call your mom's neighborhood safe.
buglaries are rampant in queens/LI.

...though you did say safeR, but it's all relative.

Fist fight? I don't think it's worth risking your life for. You never know what they'd pull on you. Maybe you were actually lucky.

That occurred to me about half way through the fight. It was at that time I thought if he wants to be here so bad maybe I'll leave. So I did. Besides, he had no problem breaking every expensive object in my living room over my head, I on the other-hand seemed to not be breaking my stuff.

She didn't set the alarm when she went to the gym. No sign of forced entry. All jewelry, cash, electronics, TV's etc. all gone. Over $16k in total. This is why I am getting a safe.

You're going to put your electonics and TVs in a safe everytime you leave the house?

Sorry about your girlfriend's, cousin's, brother's, third cousin's, father though.

Man, this is just begging for a parody thread.

memphis is dangerous, sounds like such a nice easy going place.

why would anyone want to put their stuff in a vault, that's like, "here are my valuables, take me!"

hide your shit under the sink or something.

Some professional theives will revisit after a couple of months when a decent haul that would be covered by insurance has been done.

People restock with the insurance proceeds - newer stuff waiting for collection again.

His wife is an idiot.

Sure, in hindsight. How many people set their alarm when they run out for a few minutes? She went to the gym, didn't set it. It's human nature.

Then why even have the alarm in the first place?

i dont

but then again i live in a place where i can leave the doors open for a week and all my crap will still be here

You'd be surprised how easy it is to get burgled/robbed.

Durham, NC isn't the worst place by any stretch of the imagination, but theft is insane. Robberies happen fairly frequently as well.

it's usually thugs from bordering ghetto towns.

There is a show where 'professional' thieves break into houses and show how easy it really is to case it, and how fast they can take thousands of dollars worth of stuff.
To catch a thief, I think it was canceled:(
"It Takes a Thief," on Discovery. I think they still might play reruns occasionally. Yeah, getting into a house is quite easy, and leaving with loads of expensive stuff in a hurry is quite easy, assuming you have much to begin with.
My most expensive stuff:
A used car with 90k+ miles on it.
Computer
Laptop
Wallet (with about $5 cash in it)
TI-89
high-wattage CFL's (~$20 each)
And from there, it gets less and less valuable. Unless they want to take my K-Mart-quality air conditioners too.

I think any thieves would leave rather disappointed.
There are also a few rich neighborhoods within a few miles of here. They probably have nicer stuff out for the trash than I own.

Come on man, there's a difference between running out to Wawa for milk and eggs and going to the gym for an hour.. in only one of those two instances should you even consider not setting the alarm.
And how many people can't afford an alarm system in the first place?

A professional wouldn't sit at a door picking the lock with lots of nice glass all around the house.

Most burglaries are usually neighbors or friends.

Almost all the break-ins I have been around were 2 having the boyfriend or girlfriends friends robbing the parents when they went on vacation and 1 was a neighbor of ours. Hit a bunch of homes in the neighborhood (small townhouse community of about 20 units)...many said they saw him carrying stuff back and forth to his car and a moving truck that day.

Police dropped the ball, two days later he went MIA. I think he is still not found. My parents got hit for over $100k

Why do people keep $16k worth of cash and jewelry in the house? Banks have safe deposit boxes for a reason.

Most people that have alarms have a false sense of security. Most are easily defeated by all the big name companies.

Also what's up with these companies sending sales drones door to door that live out of state? (posting this as a question as I just got done at the door with Honeywell *AGAIN*).

Such is the risk of owning and maintaining otherwise useless status symbols.

I doubt the sum total worth of all my assets is even $16k.

That's pretty retarded, but $25k for a watch or a piece of jewelry is nothing to some people...they aren't trying to be flashy with it...it's just within their means.

No matter how much cash you have losing a $25k item sucks.

So should we all just stick to cinder block wall units and a futon while we watch our 13" B/W TV and stick to sub $500 Dells? We can tell time with one of those black digital watches they send in the mail.
