Gforce 7800 vs. 9500?

I can choose one of my co-worker's hand me downs video cards: Gforce 7800 OR Gforce 9500.

I have a nice 2.6 quad processor and 2g ram, and like to play a game called Medieval Total War 2, (delusions of empire, very fun) but it chugs badly with my old 7300 card.

I saw both cards on his desk. The EVGA 9500 seems newer, has 1g memory. The 7800 BFG is much bigger and heavier needs a power connector. (My co-worker thinks it has 512.) Someone told me to ignore the first number in the model number for these and go for the bigger second number, in this case 800.

Google is my friend, I know, but friend Google confuses me. I am a very lazy and easily confused old man and have a hard time making a rational decision here. So after only ten feeble minutes of searching I come whining to you.

I cant' benchmark them both in my system, as I read I should do, I just have to pick one on Monday at lunch and let my harried co-worker get on with his life.

Fortunately, I don't have to pay for one of these cards, as he owes me, as they say, "big time" and is out of cash, so wants to barter. He does Warhammer (?) or something and not know which of the two is a better card for a game with thousands of tiny men swarming around like ants poking each other with swords.

Hopefully,

Mike

I would personally go for the 7800. I used both a 7800GTX and a HD2600XT(similar to 9500GT performance) and the 7800 was the clear winner in that battle. Unless it is the 7800GT, then go for the 7800GTX.

Near as I can tell the 9500GT will be slightly faster than the 7800GT. It will require quite a bit less power to run (good if you have a weak PSU) which will save you some cash on your power bill. The 9500GT also has much better video features (if you throw in a Bluray player it will offload the decoding duties and you can enjoy full-screen sharp picture goodness) so that will be my recommendation.

If that's a 512MB GTX, then it will outperform a 9500, hands down (often by a significant margin).

I used to play medieval 2:TW alot on my 7800gt on high settings without too many slowdowns, and that was with alot weaker processor than what you have, Id say the 7800gt is a faster, because the 8600gt wasnt as fast as the 7800gt from my expirences which is basically on a par with the 9500gt but if you want to save 50w on your electricity bills then go for the 9500gt

BTW, do you play medieval 2 online or just single player?

They should perform relatively same for older games. For newer games 9500gt is faster.
