Will running games at 1600x1200 because of this lcd's native resolution affect my performance by a huge amount? I've been trying to hold off on buying a new card but not sure if I just got myself into a position that will force me into buying one.

I think I read that games can be played at a lower resolution but with borders around them. Not sure if I'm going to like that.

Also, why would I need to turn off vsync in some games? Read that in another forum but never got a reply as to what that actually does.

Any info would be appreciated :)

Funny, I cam e to the forum to ask the exact same question. I was thinking of purchasing the Dell 20" LCD and then it occurred to me that I may have to play every game in 1600x1200..thus forcing me to spend another $500 on a video card that can do that....

You still should be able to play @ 800x600 just fine on that monitor.

you mean apperance, not performance. it's always best to play games at your lcd's native resolution but not all of us have a 6800 or x800 :). you should be fine playing at 800x600, however, the apperance won't look the best compared to native resolution. as for disabling vsync, it is not required to disable it unless you want to have fps higher than your monitor's refresh rate. eg. 60hz = 60fps max.; 70hz = 70fps max and so on.

I played with my ti4200 in 1024x768 just fine. But when i borrowed my friends 9800Pro and played in 1600x1200 its like WOW!!!! OMFG WHAT HAVE I BEEN MISSING! Things looks so clear and crisp. Of course this was with warcraft3, but UT2004 looks crazy real now. Now i gotta try out farcry

Why do you guys say 800x600?? I play just fine right now at 1024x768 :) Actually my sys is quite capable but never tried anything above that so not sure how it will handle some of the games. I should just try it out on my current sys to see how it will affect things. Not sure why I didn't think of that :)

magwa: I'll have to avoid that or I'll definitely end up upgrading heh

Should have bought that LCD during the crazy deals in the past week :) Friend and his brother did and bought 4 of them. Since I missed out on it, he's going to sell me one.

Because it is a quarter of 1600x1200 so you get 4 pixels for every one instead of the goofy scaleing you'd get with other resolutions.

Actually if you read anandtech's review, they did a comparison, and 800x600 looks a lot worse than 1024x768 and 1280x1024.
