I have an 8500LE 64MB that I plan to trade for a GF3 or GF3 ti200, and I prefer the GF3 personally because I believe far more games are optimized for Nvidia cards, but what woul you choose, and why?....on a budget mind you (I just can't afford a GF4 for now)

What I have heard is stuff like GTA3 (totally dogs out on my card) runs better on Nvidai for one. I happen to know a Duron 750/GF1 that absolutely spanks my XP1700/Radeon 8500LE in GTA3. UT2K3 advertizes for Nvidia in the opening cut scene though it runs nicely on my machine. Morrowind also runs smoother on my friends little Duron?GF1. I just notice a lot of games that should fly on my card don't.....

Again though tell me why you'd choose which card?

I still have both my GeForce3 and R8500. If the R8500LE you have is one of the newer ones with a low clockrate and buttslow memory components, then I might consider getting the GeForce3 or ti500 if it's the only thing in your price range. Not a huge leap in performance, but it's definitely better. If you can overclock your LE beyond 250/250, then it's might be best to stick with it until you can afford something in the ti4xxx or R95xx series.

The 8500 is the better card, especially in high resolution situations combined with anisotropic filtering.

I gave away my ti200 at ti500 speeds for a 8500LE and have been very happy since. I don't really need the fast FPS but the radeon is so much better in DVD and graphics quality compared to the Gf3.

What about all the pausing that happens to my Radeon 8500LE? It doesn't happen in the same games as my friends GF2.

well if that is the case... then maybe u should get a gf3. i definitely think the 8500 is better for me and what i do... ur situation is different. there is no use in us trying to sell a product to each other, as seem to be very defensive when someone recommends ati.

Seriously, if your rig is getting waxed by GF1 and GF2 on slower cpus, something is rotten in the Danemark.

Download the newest drivers (or whatever you want to use, Cat 2.5 maybe), uninstall the current ones, and the ATI Control Panel.

Use RegCleaner to get rid of any and all ATI and Nvidia references. Reboot.

Install new drivers. Reboot.

Install new Control Panel. Reboot.

A little time spent can save un-necessary expense.

Even the ATI 9700 cards have this same problem that 8500 does (pausing/stuttering in games, locking up etc). You would have thought ATI would have fixed this by now. Nvidia cards do not have these kinds of problems. ATI cards are incompatible with many different models of motherboards.

I find it funny that ATI supporters will blame everyone else for any problem the ATI card might have, yet plug a Nvidia card in the same computer and there are no problems.

As for the AntiAliasing features, I never use that anyways in any of my games. I don't even notice any difference if I turn it on.

Just some info, outpost.com is selling a Visiontek GeForce4 ti4200 card for $99. Which is probably what the GeForce3 would sell for.

tc17, if the Radeons are such horrible cards, why did you buy one?

If you can't even see what FSAA does, why did you feel the need to throw down almost 300 smackers for the fastest video card in today's gaming?

edit- oops, you weren't the one with the R9700 in the other thread, sorry.

I had a RADEON 8500 and the IQ blew me away! And, ATI's anisotropic filtering and FSAA is WAY better than nVidia's.:)

I would have to say GeForce3. If I get another card it's going to be an Nvidia one due to driver issues. I always crash and Windows Online Crash Analysis tells me it's my Radeon drivers.

well i went from a geforce 2 ultra to a gigabyte (ati) maya 2 9700 pro and i wouldnt go back to nvidia again..
i know its more powerfull and not only that its a nicer looking card to look at one the screen..
i wouldnt change it for the world and i did have a 8500LE before, it was performing worse than my girl friends ti 200 g3, but after a reinstall of windows 98se i was miles infront.. i wouldnt change that for the world.
the 9700 pro i have dont overclock to well, but when you are limited to the cpu anyway, why bother???? i like the card, wouldnt change it for the world, unless something a lot faster came out!!!

my wife was running a 700 athlon with a radeon 8500le 64 meg....that runs at slower clock speeds.
I had a geforce 3 regular......her computer gamed damn good compared to mine......I was really impressed. her car was clearly faster.

my radeon 8500 gets over 50fps at 1280x1024 in GTA3...you must need to do some tweaking. the latest patch helps a fair bit too.

Are you both using the same settings in the games?

ATI cards are incompatible with many different models of motherboards.
Uh, no. ATi's 9700 Pro is incompatbile with flaky vendors that don't stick to the AGP x8 spec. And lets not forget flaky power supplies either.

yet plug a Nvidia card in the same computer and there are no problems.
Sure, now that newer revisions of the problematic AGP x8 motherboards are out. But plug in an AGP x8 nVidia board into one of the original release motherboards and I doubt you'll get very far at all.

Having been a Nvidia man since the Annihilator days and currently running
a Ti200, i have recently been thinking about jumping over to the Radeon ship.
The only concern I have is the radeon driver updating process. I don't really
want to take the time to remove every iota of a previous driver before installing
a new one and hope it works. With Nvidia, I just download the new driver and
install. This has been sucessfull every time for me. It's quick and dirty but it works.
Maybe i've just been lucky with Nvidia but so far it has kept me in their court.

I built a buddy of mine a machine, Athlon XP1700 and 128 MB Radeon 8500 LE. Runs GTA3 at 1280x1024 beautifully, smooth as silk. Don't know what you're talking about pal.

Look.....I know how to install drivers, and I know to have the most up to date drivers and patches....GTA3 runs fine most of the time, but gets coppy every so often and thats with patches and drivers....even a fresh install of windows...Morrowind.....same thing....dogs out every so often. I am making a trade for a GeForce 3 and I will let you know how well these games work for me then.
