GF2mx Vs V5500

Can somebody please give me an opinon on this, and I am sorry if it is a stupid question.

What is a faster card in D3D and OpenGL, a 32MB GF2MX (Herc retail) or a V5-5500 AGP?

Thanks

Eric

Wow, dave is absolutely right.

The MX is competing against the V4 4500 not the 5000. If you can get a V5 5000 for the price of the MX then buy the voodoo.

The only way a 5500 isn't faster is at high res with fsaa enabled. I don't know why 3dfx would flop so badly with the 5500 but i can tell you the only thing i like about it is it's external power plug.

mind sharing with us where you're getting a V5500 for the price of an MX? after all we're all family right =D

nowadays you can get a mx for roughly 90-100, the cheapest V5 5500 i saw was running for ~140 in the Hot Deals Forum.

Actually, I already have the Herc. I am just debating if it is a worthwhile enough upgrade, since the games I play are all either D3D or OpenGL. If I get it, than I will put the GF2 in the "spare" machine... a classic P200.

If you already have the GF2MX don't get a Voodoo-5500. It would be faster in everything, but an MX is already fast enough. Wait for the Rampage/NV20.

What? One of the V5's main strong points is that it has the best-looking, most compatible, and fastest FSAA in the industry. The MX doesn't even compete.

i think what he meant is that when a voodoo is running high res with fsaa its slower than an mx not running with fsaa...

how are you gonna put an mx in a p200? is it pci? i didn't know anyone bothered making those.

Uhhh, the only card that would be worthwhile in a P200 is the original Voodoo add in. Anything else would be waiting for the CPU.

The P200 is AGP (Super 7 board). I know it would be overkill for a P200, but like I said, its a spare machine. It has a Rendition Verite V1000 in it right now baby. After I get a V5500, I will probably have the best video card in a P200 machine on the planet though.

You know if you have a super7 board already, why not get like a K6-2 or K6-3+ they are dirt cheap and with a GF2MX you could have an almost decent 2nd gaming machine, if a friend came over or whatever.

I am attracted to the V5500 personally. What I don't like about it is that it's a) still expensive (in England) b) has two fans which create a bit of noise c) just not very elegant; runs hot, needs a lot of space in the case, needs a molex power socket...

Could some brainy person tell me if Voodoo FSAA is compatible with everything and Geforce2 FSAA not? Would help ME decide...

Yeah, I thought of that before. I made a rule with myself (OK, the wife made a rule) that I can't spend any money on the second machine, it will all be made out of upgraded parts... I spend enough on the primary machine as it is. The machine will get my P3-500 probably this winter anyhow, as I will probably end up going with a 1GHZ T-Bird. Luckilly, when I speced out my old P200 machine I had enough forsight to go with an ATX case, so I won't have to spend money on that either.

Damn wives 😉 all you poor guys that have them all seem to have a computer spending cap imposed by them.

Thankfully I don't have one so I can spend as much as I want on my computer(s) 😀 *mad cackle*
lol

v5-5500 probably has better quality 2d, if that's important to you
(actauly no probably about it...)
also with the recent price drop, the v5 is a great buy in my opinion!

The V5 5500 is easily better. It's like asking if the GTS is better than the MX. The 5500 is a high end card, the MX is low end.

Rigoletto... I own a V5 and so far I've yet to find a game in which FSAA is not compatible.

As for the two fans being noisy... I can't hear them at all.

Reply to Marty... The voodoo fsaa @ 1200x1000 in 32 bit... I don't believe it can even keep up to an MX fsaa at that quality. I don't agree with you that voodoo's fsaa is so hot, It is such a performance hit , i don't believe anyone performance minded would even enable it. If anyone has access to both cards and a copy of 3dMark, I'm curious to what the actual scores would be under those conditions. I also believe you can crap out a Radeon under those conditions ... Anyone agree???

If you check this link, it will enlighten all to the quality of current video cards. Also note, quality ratings for 16MB agp MX and 32MB pci MX are both higher than the 5500. For $500 Canadian, I am a bit disappointed in the quality of the latest Voodoo offerings, and now I don't even get an opportunity to see the 6000, I'm backing The mx here.

Haven't you heard...you can get V5 5500s for less than $150 now.

How mighty is the GF2MX now, with that nasty banding FSAA in 16bit, ugly 2D....and all around nvidia-ness. Wait wait...I'm not biased...

Who the f*ck am I kidding? 3DFX rules, just wish the V5 5500 had VIVO.

Nih, the thing is your (like most) only putting the V5 under one set of conditions, those of a First Person Shooter. Believe it or not, there are alot of people who play driving and flight sims, 3d strategy games like Homeworld, etc. In these games you can run FSAA with an acceptable hit.

Also, there are still some people out there with crappy monitors (like myself). I can only run 800x600 at an acceptable refresh rate for my eyes. From what I have read, 800x600 w/ FSAA 2X is very pretty.

Another thing to consider is that the V5 with recent driver releases is creeping up on a GF2 GTS scores in FPS games. I don't think it will ever surpass the GTS, but it is in the ballpark. Add to that excellent 2d quality, the least performance hit and reportedly best image quality for FSAA, and you have a very competitive card.

I personally decided on a Radeon anyway because its specs lined up more with what I wanted. So just because the V5 doesn't line up with what you look for in a video card, doesn't mean there aren't people out there who want what the V5 has.

Ok, Ok, I gotta admit, you guys are right. Where i work right now, we sell the 5500 for $449 + GST (goods and services tax) it's a Canadian thing. That totals to almost $500. The MX with tv out is $200. That is my reasoning here. Also are sales reflect this also, about a 4 to 1 sales difference between the two cards. *If i could get the 5500 for within fifty dollars of the MX price , of course i'd get the 5500, I might be stupid , but i'm no retard,, OH Wait , did i say that out loud?

Whenever I play UT, I run it at 1024x768 w/2xFSAA. As a matter of fact, in every game I play, I enable FSAA. For NHL2k1 and Madden2k1, I enable 4xFSAA. Combat Flight Sim 2 is awesome with FSAA. I cannot even play anymore without FSAA, as I am spoiled.

Besides, if you don't like FSAA (for whatever reason), just turn it off and it'll totally blow away an MX card.

Since 3dMark isn't a game, I don't see how it's relevant.
