So she's a big fan of the "Detroit Red Wings." We live in NYC, so I checked to see if they would be playing any games here and they're not :-/ So now she wants to take a trip to either Detroit for any of their home games or to Philadelphia when they play whatever team Phil. has. I don't have a car, so whichever place we go to, we'll have to take mass transit. What town would provide us with a decent trip? Not sure how I got the impression that Detroit was a hellhole, but that's what comes to mind when I think of Detroit. I'm thinking this trip might cost $300-500 at least (including tickets). I'm not sure though cause I'm not a big traveler and don't know the prices of hockey tickets.
Notes:
1) Philadelphia or Detroit for a hockey game?
2) What town is better? (subjective, I know)
3) Approx. how much will I spend?
edit: She wants to go this upcoming season because her 2 favorite players are retiring afterward.

Man, I just had to post in this one. How can you NOT be excited about a hockey game??? 🙂 I'm biased, but I say Detroit all the way. Been there many times, and the games are great, even for non-hockey fans. They don't call our town Hockeytown without reason. If there's a few things we are known for, it's cars, hockey, and crack.
Oh, and I've never been shot. Althought one time I had a bunch of very thugish looking guys demand $20 for thier "veterans charity fund" and were nice enough to offer a little paper flag on a toothpick in return. It was tempting, but I had to turn them down.

I don't understand the "turn in your man card" comments. It's not like she want's to go to a dog show. 🙂

I'm not completely apathetic about it. I think it'll be fun, interesting and (at the very least) entertaining. I'm just hopi they don't have Yankee stadium beer prices.
edit: Oh, and if I remember correctly, her 2 favorite players are some Shanahan guy and some Eiserman(sp) dude.

Doesn't anybody check the schedule?
Detroit is NOT playing at all in Philadelphia this year, making most of the debate moot. DC might be your best bet.

They play Phil. on Jan 12th in Detroit. Might end up going to that one since it's during the university's Christmas vacation (I think).
What area of Detroit is nice to stay at? Not ridiculously expensive since we're both poor students....

don't stay in Detroit, stay in a suburb. Livonia, Warren, Dearborn, and Westland all border Detroit, and are considerably nicer areas. Let me know if there's anything I can do to help 🙂
