Gf is taking me to Atlanta for a few days for a vacation

Since I am out of school for Mardi Gras on Feb 19th through the 21st and my gf's birthday falls in that same range she is taking me to Atlanta for a few days. We want to stay in a nice hotel, and I've been looking but the only catch to the entire trip is wherever we stay it has to have one of those big jacuzzi tubs. Sounds easy enough, but I've been searching the travel sites as well as going to the websites of the nicer hotels and none of them mention anything on the tubs. So anywhom, if anyone knows how I can find one that would be great.

Soaking in the tub aside, we are looking for stuff to do. I've read that Atlanta has the largest aquarium in the world, so we are definitely hitting that up. She found a thing listing some 7 - 8 breweries in the Atlanta region so a couple of those are definitely on the list (anyone ever been to any of them, and know if any offer tours?). I think we want to go to a comedy club or something if anyone knows if there is one in Atlanta?

Also, I know we are going to have some drinks at the rotating cocktail bar, but she also wants to do some fine dining. What are the best restraunts in Atlanta (fine dining, dressing up and all)?

Thanks. 🙂

I would stay somewhere around the downtown/midtown area. When my family flies into Atlanta, I usually put them in the Georgia Terrace or the Indigo. Both are great hotels, far more interesting than your normal hotel and are right in the middle of things. I also live right down the street, but not sure if that's a plus for you or not 🙂

What kind of dining are you wanting? I've eaten at probably every worthwhile restaurant in Atlanta, so I can give you some tips. Italian? Thai? Mexican? French? Narrow it down for me a bit and I can help out. There are some great restaurants in the midtown/downtown area, but there are many areas just south of midtown that offer a lot of great options. There are also a ton of wine bars, etc. that you can have a great time in. I usually just do a pub crawl with my friends...

Not sure what kind of dining, I don't think it honestly matters. Just something really good and classy. She would be really interested in the wine bars, what are they like? Bars that specialize in wine?

It's still there 😀 It's a shady place to be at certain times though, but might be a worthwhile visit just to say you've been there. There are far, far nicer places in the midtown area though.

this is good, although a big group is best

http://www.agathas.com/

Agatha's is a comedy murder mystery dinner theater with audience participation, maximum of 170 people. All shows are original comedy murder mystery plays that take place in the dining room between the courses of the meal. There is no stage, the actors move all around you so you can see and hear from all seats. Two professional actors carry the show and the rest is up to the audience. Participation is encouraged, but not required.

**Not fine dining**

But...I had the best burger ever at Vortex. Cool college-type atmosphere. Think it's right on Peachtree (long street though).

I'm just going to list some places that immediately come to mind. These are all dressy places that offer good-great food, reasonable wine selection and a nice ambience. You'll have to Google for them since I don't want to look them all up.

Sotto Sotto - Italian. Nice selection of Italian wines.
Frutti - Italian. Right next door. It's a classier pizza shop. Good pizzas. This would be more casual.
Veni Vidi Vici - Italian. Fantastic selection of Italian wines. Wonderful ambience. Great service. An overall really nice restaurant, imo.
Nan Thai - Thai, obviously. Great food, great service and really nice ambience. One of the better Thai places I've visited in the Atlanta area.
Spice - A really popular restaurant with a lot of options. It's in an old house in midtown. The chef is well-known.
Mu Lan - A casual Chinese place, but it's pretty good.
Ecco - A bit of a fusion place. A European influence. This is right across the street from my place. Nice options, nice ambience. Good cocktail options too.
Ritz Carlton Dining Room - Mixture. This is really expensive, but it's one of the better offerings in Atlanta.
Bacchanalia - Italian. Another great Italian option.
Baroanda - Italian. If you stay in midtown, this is right across the street from the hotels I mentioned. Solid Italian food.
Wildfire Grill - Mixture. I LOVE this place. The chef is wonderful, the menu is seasonal, and everything is prepared to perfection. I've never had salmon prepared so perfectly as I had at this place. The chef even entertains special requests, and he's done this for me on a few occasions as my fiance is vegetarian.
Sabo. Mexican. Great food, great ambience (in an old building in the neighborhood; you could pub crawl all the way down to this place) and nice margaritas.

Ok, I think that's enough for now.

She would be really interested in the wine bars, what are they like? Bars that specialize in wine?

Correct. It's usually a relaxed atmosphere, and there should be a lot of bottles available for purchase as well as by the glass. Some of the most notable wine bars are:

Vinocity
Grape
Eno
Baroanda (they have a wine bar next door, but I forget the name)
VINE Restaurant. This one is next to Sabo, so you could eat Mexican and then hit the wine bar.

I think that's it for now. Hope this gives you some options.

Definitely a worthwhile place to checkout. They stay open really late, have a great selection of beers, Scotches, etc. and have above-average bar/pub food.

Six Feet Under has an excellent burger as well. Food 101 in Virginia Highlands has a classier version of the burger, and the beef itself is incredible.

I'm realizing that I probably eat out too much....

Thanks Descartes. 🙂

I think the hardest thing is going to be finding a hotel with a big tub. Also, we both really enjoy cigars whenever we come across a nice one. Do you know any good tobacco shops?

I agree. Not sure about that to be honest. Most of the older hotels have pretty small restrooms.

Sure don't man, sorry. I'd say the wine bars should have cigar offerings, but many of the places in Atlanta are non-smoking, and the options probably wouldn't be as good as a dedicated tobacco shop anyway. I'll ask a cigar afficionado buddy of mine to see if I can find a place. I'll PM you when I find it...

Eh, most major US cities have predominant areas that look like that. I'm guessing you didn't get around much, because that's really not the case.

I agree that it's not exactly a city that offers a really good first impression, especially if you're coming from the airport.

Haha... just because you had to stay in a dump, doesn't mean the city is a dump.

Agreed. We went and had a local friend show us around, I think that made all the difference in the world.

Virginia Highlands was cool
