maybe a symbol/drawing/cartoon/word/place/landscape that remind "you" of him.....writing all that just takes space and messy, remember quality over quanity.

I agree that those of you telling him not to do it are retards who hate freedom. I fought in iraq for over a year, and lost 2 very good friends to roadside bombs. I've thought about getting a set of dog tags on my forearm with a saying on it. I think he asked for opinions on the tattoo itself, not your opinions of whether he should get it. So if you don't have something constructive to say, its as easy as hitting the back button on your browser.

"How lucky I am to have had a friend, so hard to say goodbye to."
I'll get his name put below it along with 1988-2003

I am going to have these words put over the top of a hollow cross between my shoulder blades but a little hight then direct center.

Any advice for me or tips? I was also wondering if anyone knew what a tattoo of this size and detail would cost?

Despite what others may say here, I dont think there is anything wrong with your idea as long as you were in fact extremely close to him.

at least your getting a tattoo that means something deep inside for you.
thats what tattoos are for.. meaningless art is cool and all, but art belongs on paper. art that has a meaning that is personal, however, may deserve to be worn on the body.

I, personally, would like to have a tattoo on my right shoulder (on the back) that has a bald eagle with its talons tearing through what looks like skin, and showing the flag of the USA behind it.
i'd probably also get a tattoo had that my branch, which would hopefully be Military Intelligence in the US Army. gotta wait till I graduate and see what branch I am able to get.

Give it another year. Then see if you still want it.

good way to look at it. that gives you time to keep it running through your head, making sure its not a fad idea that you would have otherwise regretted.

Give some thought to losing the last "to".
"How lucky I am to have had a friend, so hard to say goodbye."

I think it's a wonderful idea and a wonderful tribute. I am thinking of getting a tatt in remembrance of my father who passed away 4 years ago.

I think it's an ok tribute but IMO, I don't like the place he's putting it.

OP, why don't you do an armband around your bicep with those words on the outside and his initials on the inside... or even just shorten it to ...so hard to say goodbye...
That way you cover yourslef from the misconception that you're gay.
...not that there's anything wrong with that.

I'm not a big fan of memorial tattoos generally... been thinking about getting my three kids baby feet prints on me somewhere...

I have my first son's footprints tattooed on my right arm. We lost him due to premature birth and he was born stillborn. A year later, our twins died due to premature birth; one lived two hours, the other made it 11 hours.
I'm thinking of ideas for my second memory tattoo.

That is the best response I've ever seen on here.

Seriously, I'd like to shake your hand, and have a picture taken of that moment, and I'd keep that picture to show people, hey, this is that guy, the one who explained that encouraging a 19year old not to get a tattoo was clearly the sign of someone who hates America, and of course the fact that freedom=America.

Brilliant.

I second the 'give it a year and see if you still want it' school of thought.

I mean, say you wait a year, and then you want it and you get it and you're happy. You haven't lost out, it's not like you've forgotten the guy, or for that one year you didn't still miss him and cherish the memories etc

On the other hand, say you get it now, and you find a new best friend (hell, you find Jesus for all I care) and then you think, hmm, damn. Or you think, hmm, you know, I think keeping a picture of us together in my wallet would've been better (and for the record, equally 'a bit gay' :p)

I don't think you've got anything to lose waiting a year for it, but you could gain some serious relief.

(Hopefully I've kept my ideas relating to tattoos fairly independent, I was trying to be objective and reasonably unbiased for you OP, as your first tattoo is a pretty important decision IMO.)

You should add at least 45 more words to the quote so that it covers your entire back...that way it takes someone 45 minutes to read it.

On second thought, do something more constructive (and less white trash) to remember your friend. Plant a tree, buy a park bench with a dedication plaque, give a small scholarship in his name, etc...

:Q Oh snap!

Whatever floats your boat, OP. How'd your friend die?

Edit: Have you considered a decal on the back window of your car with the same text? That seems to be pretty popular here among young people who have had friends die. And it will be seen a lot more than your tattoo.

Posting in this forum about tattoos is as smart as posting about how church went last sunday.

A friend of mines did something similar, but he had a cemetary plot with a moon over it, with his friends names on the gravestone.

Looks freaking amazing as hell, but he paid like 1200 for the whole thing. He is lucky since he is light-skinned and has a huge arm.

I'd go for it. I wish I had the skin (I am black as hell, so tattoos dont show well at all) and $$$ to do something nice.

I have a tattoo on my right arm/shoulder. From my experiences I recommend you strongly reconsider your decision to get a tattoo. I've had mine for a couple of years and its just "there". There isn't anything special or cool about it anymore, and I wish it were gone.

Good luck if you do decide to do it though.

I like how anyone that opposes this idea hates america. Dave, are you off your meds again?

I guess anybody that opposes suicide also hates america. Well, I actually approve of people committing suicide, I think more should do it.

Uhm ... wtf? Did I miss a memo somewhere? Expressing an opinion (when asked for one no less) is now "hating freedom"?? OP asked for opinions, people gave em. It's not like they are proposing legislation to ban tattoos.

I think you guys are drinking to much of the kool aid :disgust:

FWIW, I think its tacky also ... but hey, if it's your thing, go for it. Freedom and all that.
