Mine had not erupted yet, and two of them were impacted sideways. They had to split them in half with a chisel to get them out. I asked for them to check them out and it was 6 pieces!
I remember going in, getting gassed, and waking up in another room. "how did I get here?"
you walked
"oh bullshit"
LOL

Nice.

I just had a nice dinner. I hope it lasts me through tomorrow morning. :colbert:

I ate/drank a lot of chicken broth the first couple days. Easy to swallow and gives you some nutrients. Also, chicken soup just makes you feel better overall.

Remember that those who are there caring for you are trying to help - don't bite their heads off no matter how bad you may feel.

I got mine out just a few months ago.

before the doctor knocks you out, ask what anestesia he's planning on giving you afterward, and if all he says is codine, ask for something stronger.

that was all my doctor gave me and it suuucked. had I been fully conscious I would have asked for something stronger and I was still shaking off the anestesia.

take more than the recommended dose of percoset, or whatever painkiller you get.
I got prescription painkillers when I had mine taken out and I ended up giving them away. All they did was make me nauseous.

Only tip I can give is don't give away your drugs. Luckily I didn't need mine, but you never know. Trying to get another script for prescription painkillers is impossible. They'll have it on record that you already got a ton of them so they'll assume you're a drug addict and tell you to go die in a fire.

Ask for a syringe, and rinse out the socket with saline after you eat.

Be careful with that. I got stopped at a checkpoint when I had mine taken out. I was young and stupid so I consented to a background check. I had two box cutters (from work) and the syringe. They tried to arrest me for drug paraphernalia. I had to show them the open end.

I know. Cool story huh?

You could probably lay down a racial profiling lawsuit if you happen to be black. Box cutters? There's no way a black man has a job or legitimate use for these, so he must be a drug dealer!!

Take the pain meds until gone. Don't OD, stick with the plan. Also, don't tilt your head forward for the first couple hours. All the blood, spit, and bone fragments in your numbed mouth will just pour on out.

if you lay down to sleep after getting home, put a towel over your pillow... I totally trashed the pillow in my parents guest room after waking up with a pool of blood around my mouth.

Unfortunately, I'm white. Well, more like a redneck actually.

If you have the option, do it under local anaesthetic.

This.

I had 4 pulled at once, and two had huge roots... but they knocked me out.. I woke up about 25min later, pretty out of it, but it was over. Easy. I didnt have much pain, just got a few prescription Ibuprofen.. pain was manageable for me. For a while afterwards, one spot was really sensitive to cold stuff, took about 6 weeks, but it cleared up. It was funky feeling the stitches back there.

I bought a pack of those nutrient drinks and just had those for a few days. I had it done Wednesday, and took Thur/Fri off, but I could have been back at work Thur morning.

The first ~5 days after the procedure is when you can get a dry socket, so do your best to prevent it. Eat soft foods only, do it slowly, try to limit jaw movement throughout the day, and even try complete fasting if you can. The less "action" happens in your mouth, the better. 🙂

Once you come back to your doctor in a week or so, and everything is okay (you might have stitches removed), then slowly start with hard foods. Dietary inconvenience is much better than a dry socket!

Mine weren't too painful, I stopped taking my Vicodin after day 2.. mostly because I hate narcotics. The 'twilight' sleep they put you in is kind of interesting, I vaguely remember them breaking one of my teeth in half and having a conversation.

Oh, and the softer the food the better.

I had mine removed last Thursday. I think I'm past the point of "dry socket risk," which is great. The stictches have been slowly breaking apart the past two days or so.

I took Vicodin for the first 2-3 days and just a little OTC ibuprofen when needed since. The biggest pain the last three days or so is just a sore jaw. It feels like when you hold your mouth wide open for a really long time, with no way to get rid of the soreness.

Don't get put to sleep. It's more fun if you're awake when they do it, that way you can hear the crunching and see the blood all over the dentist's gloves. I know this from experience.
