Okay.. I live in an apartment complex where I am fairly sure I can gain access to an unsecure wireless network.

how moral/immoral is this? I'm not going to be hammering their connection.. just email and posting on atot and irc and whatnot

What if they shut their connection down?...then you have no connection. Just get your own and sell it to the other residents if you want to be immoral.

Stealing bandwidth is immoral. The fact that you've asked means you think it probably is, but want an excuse to get something for nothing.

Are you paying for it? No.... it's called stealing even though you are only going to use it for "..email and posting on atot and irc and whatnot
"

If you want to continue using it, try to find out who owns it and pay part of the monthly fee. Problem solved...

Nothing is free... unless you steal it.

Let's see...

They paid for equipment and service. You use their resources for free, without their consent. Looks like if your worried about the morality of this situation, your gonna be paying for an ISP.

You could always offer to secure their network for a nice little fee.

Well, it is stealing.

But hey, they're your morals, not ours.

OK, when I steal from you, who's morals are those?

Agreed.

Find out who has the network and offer to chip in if you want to raise the "morality" a few notches.

Keep in mind that they can monitor *all* of your traffic. If you're using any ftp sites, checking email over pop3, etc., then they could easily obtain your password.

I've got a better idea:

1. Hack into his computer
2. Upload kiddie porn to his computer
3. Blackmail him and threaten to report him to the cops unless he lets you use the access point
4. Profit!

:D

The thing about morals is - they are different things to different people.

No one enjoys being ripped off. Thus theft is immoral. No one enjoys being murdered, thus murder is immoral.

There ARE some universal morals, no matter how much the relativists would like to differ to justify their immoral actions.

And how many murdered people have you had the opportunity to ask if they enjoyed it?

Do you want to be murdered? I know I don't.
