getting weird lag

ok i have a athlon xp 1600+ and 512mb of pc2700, so my system is no slouch. i'm at school, so i use a couple file sharing utilities, ie direct connect / mIRC to share files etc. it seems like when i upload sometimes, it slows my system to a crawl, like it will take a few seconds to open up a window which usually takes a 1/5 of a second. Is it because i'm uploading at 500k+? i don't think that would do much to my system because its not even utilizing my cpu very much. even when i run prime95 and do other things its fine. It also happens after i play games like battlefield. anyone have any ideas? i want to be able to share files and use my system at the same time.

i think, uploading at 500k/s wont seem like it's pushing your system but it probably is. every now and again the sys will slow down and this is caused by the speed of ure upload

500k uploads? nice. My stupid DSL maxes out @ 40kB. I'd recommend either capping the UL's, or else get a dedicated hard drive for all your file sharing needs. Perhaps getting a faster HD would help to. I recommend the Seagate Barracuda IV's. they are insanely quiet, and fast.
