getting the deposit back

does it matter if you clean the apt...do you get more of your deposit back? dont they take money out to clean the apt anyway + any damages you may have done...?
just trying to figure out if it's worth taking the time to clean the apt after we move out.

AFter you clean

Take Detailed photographs.

I think you need to just leave it in reasonable condition ?
As there will be the normal wear and tear.

Oh yea Pick up a pack of Mr Clean Cleaning Sponge.
It cleans everything andI mean everything

Yeah, definitely take pictures. My stupid landlord wanted to keep a hundred dollars. Then when I talked to him, and told him that I had pictures of EVERY corner of the apartment, and would be more than willing to go through them to see what was wrong, he backed out.

He STILL wanted to keep five bux! I don't know why, I guess it was some sort of personal victory for him, or whatever.

Take pictures, and if possible, bring them up to your place before you actually move out (If you have time) and talk them through it. They will try to screw you most of the time.

If you live in a slum, like I did in college, it doesn't matter. We cleaned for like 2 days and they still charged us over $100 per room because of cleaning. $100 for a 4x5 bathroom (estimated) is alot of cleaning especially since they hire illegal immigrant workers. With that said, if I had known, I would have never spent a second cleaning.

How about that Double Whammy Tabby ? 🙂 You up for a game ?

yes, clean it. Don't have to sparkle clean, but leave no obvious dirty spots. For my last 2 apts, I got full refund plus a small deposit interest.

from personal experience they always charge for cleaning, no matter how well you clean. So its sort of not worth it.

guess it depends on how much you had to put down, but as someone else said, make sure you have the landlord walk through with you if you do end up cleaning so they cant try to tag anything else on.The last place we lived in did that to us.
It also a good idea to make sure you do a walkthrough when you move in to a place to make sure they write down any little spot on carpets, walls, etc

wow an interest, you must have had a nice landlord, i got a b@stard who is trying to charge us another sec dep b4 we move in, based on the fact that maybe we hadn't remembered that we paid b4

One landlord ripped us off for $200, even though we left the apartment cleaner than when we moved in.

Take pictures when you move in, and take pictures again when you move out.

Depends on how long you've lived there, and how the rental company is.

If they've been cool, I would clean to try and recoup a fair portion of the deposit. Otherwise, they'll probably retain a big chunk of the deposit regardless of how well you do.

No matter how good you clean, the landlord almost always sends in a cleaning crew. I mean they have to show the apartment to prospective renters anyway. So clean, but don't break your back doing it. Personally whenever I got $200 back from a $300 deposit I felt fairly satisfied. You might do better, but I wouldn't expect the full amount back unless you were transffering the amount to another complex the landlord owns.
