Getting SYNC upgrade to ver. 2.0 today - *UPDATE 2* : All Done - it works!

I just took my 2008 Ford Fusion to the dealer this morning to upgrade my system to
SYNC version 2.0.

I like the idea of the automatic 911 assist in the event of an accident and the vehicle health report
diagnostic sounds like a good idea (have to see how detailed/useful it really is). I previously
upgraded it myslef from 1.0 to 1.2, but for some reason Microsft & Ford make the 2.0 upgrade a "dealer only" install.

Does any other ATOT Ford owner have SYNC? Anybody gone through the 2.0 upgrade? How do you like SYNC?

3-26-09 **EDIT - UPDATE**

It didn't go well at all. The update failed (the dealer techs tried it several times, but kept timing out with data transfer errors over the USB port). They are getting a different USB cable and will try again today - I take the car back over in 1/2 an hour. In chatting with the technicians and "peeking over their shoulder", I was amazed at HOW deeply embeded this system is in the electronics system of the car. My SYNC was silent on the ride home last night 🙁

**UPDATE 2**
I just picked up the car - the upgrade is all done and it works fine. The culprit was a USB cable. I have enabled 911 assist (hope I never need to use it) and will try the Vehicle Health Report soon.

Does the dealer charge you for the upgrade, or does Ford pay for it?

Mine is being done for no charge. I don't know that that is the case for all dealers (IIRC, some members on the Ford Fusion forums were getting charged $25-$50). I called ahead to ask the dealer near me and the service manager said it was no charge.

I really like the idea of MS (or any software company) getting directly involved in creating these systems. I can only see it making them cheaper, more consistent, and have more features in the long run. I give Ford kudos for having the foresight to get in bed with MS early...as I see this system getting used in more and more cars once Ford's exclusivity contract in the states end.

Since I traveled with Ford for a while, I had to demo the Sync system pretty often. Great system, lots of potential still. I'm glad to hear you're enjoying it...you're keeping some of my friends employed 😉

Heh - I may have chatted with one of them on the "syncmyride" website technical support chat applet when i was asking questions related to the 1.2 upgrade.

Surprised that when people pay it's only 25-50.

That 911 assist is cool.

I think the 911 part is due to GM having the same thing with their Onstar.

Competition is good. 😉

Yes...competition is always good. I'm really excited to see where these things go in the next 10 years.

How do I find out what version of SYNC I have?

Go and sign up at syncmyride.com

After you create your account and add your car's VIN, it should show the last version they know about (which should be the version the factory put on unless you have down an upgrade yourself). If you have 1.0 ir 1.1 you can download and install 1.2 yourself (installs off of a jump drive). The 2.0 upgrade that adds 911 Assist and Vehicle Health Report can only be installed by a dealer.

I just got off the phone with the service dept at my dealer. He had absolutely no idea what I was talking about but said "we have that new nine eleven thing i think"...

According to syncmyride I have 1.1. I am going to install 1.2 and then try to call the dealer again.

Your dealer isn't the first to not know what was going on.

When you install 1.2, make sure to pay attention to the instructions and wait for the SECOND "Install complete" message (takes about 8-12 minutes). Some people didn't read carefully and yanked the jump drive after the first announcement of install complete at about 40 seconds. It really does take 8 - 12 minutes.

I have an 08 Fusion that was one of the first to have the Sync built. I really do love the system and was looking forward to the Vehicle health report and E-911. For whatever reason the 08 Fusion upgrade seemed to have been delayed for months and every so often I would go onto syncmyride and see if an update has been put out.

I guess I will try to call my dealer and find out what the deal is on updating this. I hadnt checked in a while so thanks for posting this because I had pretty much given up!

How do you like your Fusion anyways, I've got about 17,500 miles on mine and its been fantastic. I've rented several other cars in the same class for work and can't get over how poorly they stack up in comparison to my fusion.
