The Only problem I have is that I can't play audio cds, and no sound come out from the speakers. All the sound drivers for my mvidia card are installed and everything seems to be find. If someone knows knows what the problem could be, I would appreciate an advice. At the mean time I am reading lots about Linux, I may be able to figure it out on my own.

What model of sound card do you have? You also need permission to access the sound device. Try playing sounds as root and see what happens.

I went back and downloaded the .tar.gz files for the driver so I could try to reinstall it that way. I do tar xzvf filename and then I go into the folder it creates and do make install and I get yet another error. It says something like I'm trying to use a compiler that is different from the compiler used for the current running kernel. The readme gives a different command, but it includes a path in it that starts with /src and I dont have a /src. Any way I can get the make install thing to work?

What was the error exactly? Did you follow the instructions?

One of the directories in that path looked like a general thing that you are supposed to put your own information into, which made me think the path is already supposed to be there. It was something like /src/something/my-krnl-smb/blah/blah. I can't remember exactly what it was. Also there was a variable it said you could change to make it compile anyway. I could try that. I'll just have to go look up how to change environment variables.

There is a FAQ on installing the linux nVidia drivers in the Linux FAQ thread. There may also be information on setting environment variables.

I wrote the nVidia linux FAQ here, so if you have any questions or comments or suggestions, please let me know. Ive never done the install so I dont know if it is really missing anything.

Yeah guys, I am sorry I got messed up. Almost everything is working on my Linux system. I got a 40 gb hard drive, it has to partions for windows xp and a 10 gb partion for linux and all its own partions. It works really nice, but now the only problem I am having is that I don't know how to work with CD-ROOMS. Chaotic mentioned something about permissions and yes, every time I put a cd in one of my two drivers I get this error message; file:/mnt/cdroom You don't have the rights to access this address. However if I put a cd in the slave drive and go to play a cd, then I can play the cd. Only on this drive though, It won't happen on the master drive.

Thanks for the help

I read through the FAQ. It looked basically the same as what it says on the Nvidia site. So it should be right(I don't have experience with it either). I also read in the FAQ thread that you can use export to set environment variables. The error message I got said to set IGNORE_CC_MISMATCH. But when I do "export IGNORE_CC_MISMATCH" it doesnt appear to do anything. I'm thinking there must be something more to the export command. But I can't understand what it gives me when I do man export.

I have a question rpc64, I know you are having troubles with your video and I can't help you, I am new to Linux. But, can you play music cds, are you there?. Thas is the problem I am having.
I have a Nvidia Fforce 2 and I didn't have any problems during installation, my Linux Mandrake found its drivers, maybe you at to reinstall Linux as I have done when I encountered problems at the begining.
Thank you

All of the environment variables I have ever set come in 2 parts. First the name of the variable, like $PATH, and second the value of the variable, say /bin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/usr/sbin:etc.

And I mention the FAQ over and over again in hopes that you will try to follow it. I wrote it because I was bored with this topic.

n0cmonkey: As I said before, I read the FAQ. I also read the instructions on Nvidia's site and looked at a topic on a forum linked from there. They all had basically the same procedures. My problems didn't start until after I read all that and tried to do it.

Granorense: I haven't tried to play any cds yet, so I really don't know. My sound was working when I had KDE running before I messed up my video. And I only have 1 DVD drive, so my setup is a little different from yours. Have you tried logging in as root and changing permissions on your drive? I don't actually know how to do that, but it sounds like that's what you need to do.
