Getting Started with a Web site - Need help!

So I want to make a website for myself that will serve as my own personal site for displaying photography/art/designs etc. as well as acting as a site I can send employers to on resumes. I'll also want to be able to post on it like a blog, etc. etc. A basic personal website.

So...how do I do this? I know a little html, but want the site to be snazzy, so I'd rather use a program like Frontpage that will let me do more advanced things. Eventually I'd like to get some flash involved and make something really sweet, but that will come later.

Questions:
1) How do I get a domain name? how much does it cost? from whom to I buy/register it?
2) How do I get web hosting? What level of quality do I need? I know to stay away from things like Dreamhosting. I also dont want a place that is going to put ads on my page. Also - does the hoster need to support whatever program I use to make the site? Like if I build it in frontpage, does the hoster need to have FP extensions?
3) What is the best program to use to make the site? I'm familiar with Frontpage, so that seems easiest to me - but I really don't know what its limitations are, and if I'll be able to do more advanced stuff once I get into that. I'm good at learning programs, but I don't really have the time right now to pick up a whole language or anything, so something with a gui that I can work with pretty quickly is preferable.

umm..ya. That should get me started right? Any advice you could offer would be MOST appreciated.

Thanks!!

1) Domain Names - there are plenty of Domain Name Registrars out there. I can really recommend any because I'm in australia, and rates are different of here. But if I were you, I wouldn't pay more than $15 (maybe even $10) for a .com/.net address. But remember, this is a yearly fee.

2) You can get free hosting, but if you want it without advertising, you'll have to look hard. But if you want no-ads, alot of space and alot of bandwidth (you'll need it for photo's), then you'll need to pay for it. Again, I can't really recommend any host in particular.
Like if I build it in frontpage, does the hoster need to have FP extensions?
Only if you want to use the fancy features in frontpage. But if it's just HTML, then you don't need anything fancy like that.

3) Frontpage is easy to use. I sometimes use frontpage for bulk scripting, but when i want to do stuff well, I write it (or atleast edit it) with HTML.

You can buy a domain name from just about anyone now a days, I've purchased mine all through go-daddy and had no problems and paid a competitive price. you just got to ignore all the other garbage they try to sell you along w/ the domain.

The going rate is around $8 per year for a standard .com name.

With regards to the host you just need to do some research and find out which host's offerings match what it is that you want to do with your site. My current host is flexible with how much space they give me, automatically upping it if I need more, no bandwidth problems, and they don't go down. I'm happy and I do the rest!

Just do a little research there's a lot of info out there.

I've made a couple websites, using TotalChoiceWebhosting and I haven't been
dissapointed at all. $10 for the domain, the starter hosting is only $4 a month.

Personally, I prefer to get the domain through the same place I want it hosted
at. If you get them at different places, you will need to notify (or change yourself)
the DNS for your website with the domain registrar once you find a host. Sometimes
they input the info wrong (had that a couple of times) and it takes a while to get
it fixed.

Oh, and for your last question, I personally think the best program to write the site
is Notepad. I find it the easiest for getting the page to look the way I like it without
having a lot of extra code put in there.

Could you guys reccomend some resources to do research about this? My googling isn't bringing up many useful results.

Also - dph1077 - when you say notepad I assume you mean coding it yourself?

ipowerweb and bluehost are pretty good. i have used both. pretty good prices too.

and yes, by notepad he means coding it yourself.
