So my friend bought a macbook and has had to return it 4 times already because of problems it has had. Is there an actual lemon law regarding returns? Or is that all just hearsay?

Lemon laws apply to cars.

Though if it's sent in for the same (or similar) repairs that much within a few months you can request escalation in regards to unit replacement. Most manufacturer's have something in place for that.
