Getting slow network throughput. Any solution?

Both machines use Win 98. They can see each other fine.
Theres pc1, pc2, pc3.
Transfering pc1->pc2 is very slow through network neighborhood
Like less then 1kb/s
and sometimes it just won't transfer at all. Network connection dies.
But when I make the pc1 use a ftp server.
and have the other pcs(pc2) ftp to it. transfer rates are MUCH faster
300-700kb/s, though still not as fast as it could be for a 100mbps network.
All machines have 10/100 network cards and connect to a Netgear RT314.

pc2<->pc3 is very fast so I think there is something wrong with pc1.

Is there something wrong with the settings on that pc that makes windows transfers so slow?
Anyone know how to fix it without reformatting/reinstalling windows?

Are they connected thru a Hub, or from NIC to NIC?

through the RT314 Router so you could consider that a hub.

you probably have too many protocols installed. Ditch IPX/SPX and NetBeui, just use TCP/IP and it should work better. The FTP server uses only TCP/IP and that's what's working so much faster.
Also try limiting the size of your subnet if possible, to reduce the amount of polling it has to do when looking for network neighborhood.

Ditch everything except TCP/IP and NetBeui.
NetBeui is defintely the fastest protocol in a small LAN but sadly not all applications use it.
Also you might want to set static IPs for all machines.
You also might wanna check whether your cards are set to Half/Full Duplex (I don't know which one is correct/better, I think Full)

You don't need Net BEUI for a small network either. SPend some time and get the TCP/IP working right, and IMO that's the fastest connection you can get. It's notthe easiest to set up, I agree, but I think NetBeui is a pain....
