I have had my eye on these Altec Lansing speakers and would like your comments.. thanxs!

ACS56 suggested by little bro for supreme gaming experience and on-board vol/bass/treble control

ATP3 for thier space saving qualities

ADA880R these are digital will they work with the SB LIVE Value?

I also like these but i see they have a USB port connection...can they still be connected to the sound card if i get a set?

ACS495
ADA305
ADA310W[/b}

I am using these at college so i do not have a bunch of space and will primarily be using it for listening to mp3 dowloads and dvd movies when i have time and for playng a few games

Which do you suggest? experience with your suggestion appreciated

If you want DD 5.1, I would recommend the Videologic DigiTheatre, or the Midiland S4-8000

If you want Altec Lansing, I do not know the product range, so I am not an expert, you wither want 2.1, 4.1 or 5.1 speakers, depending on what you wnat:

2.1 - Games, DVD's, MP's,
4.1 - EAX Games, MP3s, DVDs
5.1 - DD5.1, EAX Games (if you set it up right) MP3s

The live has a digital out, so you can use that for DD 5.1

I'd say go with the ACS56 for a college sys. As for the USBs you listed you'll have to check the specs. Most USB speakers also have stereo 1/8" jacks (but check the specs and be sure).

Also there is supposed to be a SBL Value 2 which has digital out on it.

Personally I'd say get the best you can afford.

(Then again, I shelled out for Klipsch Promedia v2 400s......and they F'ing ROCK!!!!!!!!! I use them with my comp and with my home entertainment system [I have everything in my room] :) )

I almost agree with AMB's list, just one change:
2.1 - Games, MP3s
4.1 - EAX Games, MP3s, DVDs
5.1 - DD5.1, EAX Games (if you set it up right), DVDs, MP3s
(Heh..... just becuase I'm in a "sh!t disturber" kinda mood, it's plural s not belonging to 's :) )

Those Altec Lansing speakers with the USB connections do work conventionally with a standard connection. I have the ADA305's paired with an SB Live, and they are great. I use them on my DVD playing-machine, and the sound quality is excellent, with good bass response and crisp middles and highs (I'm not an expert though -- just sounds good). You can just leave off the USB connector and use a regular audio cable. I don't remember if you can connect both -- I didn't really care about the USB feature.

I have a four speaker setup (two different sets: one Yamaha for front, the other JBL for rear) on my other computer which I use for gaming, and I really find it to be a pain since I can't leave them setup all the time (the wife complains!). Since I wanted good speakers for my other computer and only wanted two satellites, the 305's were nice and fit that job well. If you don't have a lot of space, four speakers could be a pain. The only problem is that I don't think they have a headphone jack (could be wrong, I don't use headphones on those).

You missed a good deal though -- they were $99 at OfficeMax, but I just saw this weekend that they have returned the price to $159. I jumped on them when I saw the reduction. You might try visiting one since they may not update their prices as quickly on the shelf.

The newer Altec Lansings, the ADA880R specifically, sound like crap. Their sub isn't very good and neither are the speakers. Unless they have done something to change that line of speakers, don't get them, and grab the ACS65's.
