Getting rid of that "Search Lop.com" window?!

I'm running WinXP Professional, and for some reason, that stupid "Search Lop.com" window keeps popping up at almost everything I do. Is there any way to get rid of it?

I've got the same problem. I've read some posts on other boards about getting rid of it but it hasn't helped me.

RE:

"Theres a good article about this problem, including a solution and a preventative measure on this page

"had the same thing, i removed it from the regeristry and the serch lop.com still would not go away. I was going to use restore, but it would not let me. next thing i know i have no device manangers,i could not get on line or do anything. This thing caused me to format.
and my computor is still acting funny, something keeps turning off my virus software."

check your Active Desktop settings. i think thats where it goes. i close it, and when i refresh the desktop, it comes right back. funny little guy. hahaha

I'm running 2000 and had the same problem. This may also work for you: Search your registry for lop.com and clear the data fields. Then search your drive for *lop* and kill those files. Then search for a file named plg_ie0.dll and delete or rename it.

Test by running IE and typing in some fictitious url like www.kjhkjhdsdfh.com

The advice about disabling active desktop (if xp has that) is sound.

Yup, had the same thing happen to me too. Finally figured out how to remove it. Searching the registry found no entries for lop.com but if you search your hard drive for the file plg_ie0.dll you'll also find a file named lopsearch.exe in the same folder. You'll want to delete those files. You'll probably have to delete the dll from DOS as Windows will say it's in use. I also deleted a file called deskicon.lib as it had the same date as the others.

Next you'll have to find and delete a file called desktop.swf and desktop.htm. They should be located in C:\WINDOWS\WEB\Wallpaper (Win98). The spyware adds a flash object to the desktop.htm. I actually opened my desktop.htm file in Dreamweaver and just deleted the flash object and resaved the file. I think if you go ahead and delete the desktop.htm file, you'll probably have to reconfigure your desktop wallpaper ... no biggie, though. Well that should do it. No annoying search popup window when you have active desktop on. I hope this helps anyone whose been as irritated by this unholy piece of crap as I have. 😀

Hopfully this thread might help you out.

Good luck.

braque361,
Your post solved my problem, which above thread didn't. Thanks for your first post. Welcome aboard.
