I'm speaking of the icons you get from assorted programs that end up in the lower right hand corner of the taskbar. I know I can disable them by clicking on some of them & choosing to disable. But some don't have this feature or do and just re-appear after a reboot/restart.
In Win98SE I used to be able to disable any of them by typing "msconfig" in "Run" & uncheck them in the startup items. And I know you can still do this with ME, however if you do it says "Windows will now start with limited drivers blah, blah, for troubleshooting" or something along those lines which it never did in SE. Does this mean it's not loading certain things it should be when I disable these programs icons? Is there anyway to get rid of them without this happening? Am I making any sense?. I tried using "TweakUI 1.33" but it didn't seem to have this feature except for how to disble the "speaker" control icon.

If you are using msconfig, you are on the right path....problem comes in when you have programs like aol instant messanger, realplayer, the microsoft messenger, etc. You can disable these all you want, but the moment you start them up, they will put themselves back in your startup group. To get by this, you need to disable the startup option **IN** the programs, and it won't keep adding its self back to the startup group

BTW, these are some items you don't want to take out of startup....they don't take up too much in the resource department....some of them start and then terminate anyway :

scanregisty
taskmonitor
systemtray
loadpowerprofile (there will be 2 of these....leave them both checked)
