Getting rid of raccoons?

So I live in a relatively industrial area, but that doesn't make us immune to raccoons apparently.

My neighbor says they lurk in a nearby tree along with the rest of the family..

What should I do to get rid of these little rabies carrying suckers?

Well you are more likely to see them in cities then in the country since there is so much extra food around.

You can always release your pet spiders on them.

Why? I had a whole family of coons nesting in a tree behind my old house, and they never bothered us a bit. Kinda cool actually IMO.

I think the OP is the bigger pest here.

Be glad they didn't chow your kids down for dinner.

More like this.

Can't imagine why you would want to get rid of the cute lil buggers.

Not sure if that's sarcasm or not but...Rabies? Diseases?

They're not exactly domesticated, and if one accidentally disturbs them they will become very territorial and aggressive.

Anything with a long ass tail like they do are anything but cute. It's what separates gerbils/hamsters from mice/rats.

I don't think they get rabies or other deseases any more than other preditory animals. rats are worse.

I thought you were going to say you have them living under your house or in your attic. I've never been particularly into chasing off animals who don't invade my house unless they are attacking my vegetable garden (I've got issues with a certain squirrel right now).

For coons in the house I'd use ammonia. If you are having problems with these tree dwellers you might call a local agency and see what they say. In my town they have one assigned to animals.

The raccoons in the florida keys are tiny. The ones up north can get pretty damn big, over 30 lbs.

They are not scary unless you wrestle with one, and you never wrestle a my excellent compatriot!!

They are not cats.

Some folks keep them as pets. Its rarely legal.

the official solution given to me from the PA Game commission was the following:

Take a sealable sandwich baggy (not the foldover ones) and fill it FULL with ammonia, then seal.
Cover the outside of the baggy with peanut butter.
Place right next to garbage cans (or area from which you wish them to never return).
Repeat 2-4 times until raccons never return.

It works believe me.

What you may need to use is some wild animal repellent to spray or sprinkle around your house or lawn. Some lawn and garden stores sell those repellents, I believe, and they're effective enough to keep out any wild animals or pests.

YOU should call a pest removal service only if they are intruding on your property.
ANYthing you do to them is specifically prohibited under the disturbing / harassing wildlife statutes.
AND be advised, should you take the advice of GODMODE and actually try shooting one, regardless of what type of rifle / pistol, you'll find yourself facing criminal charges regarding shooting / hunting in an urban area. THEN when the Dept of Fish and Game get wind of it, they will prosecute you as well for hunting without a license.

Your best plan is to not do anything, and simply remove any tempting treats like cat food left out.

spider dammit. 😀

rabies? still pretty rare, but they have various things you can use from a perimeter treatment to ultrasound.

Do you have other animals though that need to be in the same place?
